98 specialized FSR with rock shox ario... compatible?

I have a 1998 specialized FSR ground control. My rear shock is completely shot and I need to replace it. I have been looking at replacing it with a rock shox ario. I really like the fact it has a remote lockout, it would be so nice to be able to switch on the fly between hard tail and soft. I just want to know if anyone knows if its gonna fit. I dont want to buy a shock and find out it wont work on my frame. and this may sound like a dumb question but does it matter which end goes up on the shock? or can you mount it either way? The reason I ask is cuz when I look at the pictures of the shock it looks like if i could mount the end with the adjustments down at the link end it would work but the other way around it looks like a tight sqeeze. Any help is appreciated... thanks

Most of the earlier linkage FSRs used the same size shock: 6½" eye-to-eye and 1½" stroke. Measure yours to be sure and then look for any shock with these specifications. It was one of the more common sizes of shock out there (and the Ario is available in that size). Functionally, most shocks can be mounted either way; clearance and convenience in reaching adjusters, etc. are the only limiting factors.

To be honest, with an FSR, you don't need a lockout. No matter the age, the Horst-link FSR design is still one of the most efficient-pedalling suspension designs ever made; and you will get much better performance out of it if you leave it active. If you work with the suspension rather than fighting it and adjust your riding style to work in concert with it, it will reward you.

Even a simple Float R would be a vast improvement over the stock RS Deluxe. Manitou Swingers can be had pretty cheap; they got knocked a bit but my (limited) experience was favorable. If you find a rebuilt 5th Element cheap, it would be worth a look (strictly my opinion).
