Price is a little stiff. It listed for $770 in 2010; seller definitely has it priced "optimistically."

Ok, thanks for the reply. I decided not to go with it and have found a good deal for a 2012 rockhopper. Only thing is, it is a smaller 15.5 frame. I am a hair over 5'7 with an inseam of between 30 and 31. And I am slightly heavier at about 180.

So I think I can fit both 15.5 and 17 frames ok but my question is what would be better in the long run in terms of performance? How would my size affect weight distribution on a smaller frame climbing or descending, etc.?

Err having problems finding an local decent bikes second hand...found loads of cheap rubbish dual sus jobbies but no actual bikes of any kind, I'm obviously at my price range going to get a hard tail.

Anyways what are the common budget options these days I'm unfortantly not to knowledgeable in what's good or not, all I know is I won't be getting a very good fork at this range but that's not bothering me as I will upgrade to a new bike once I have learnt the skills this is just a trainer bike if you will.

I will be buying in the begging of july budget is £300-350 MAX I can't go over at this...so please don't suggest spending more (well £10 maby but really don't want to.)

I'm not expecting a brillent bike at this range and have no illusions of anything decent just a beater to learn with.

Also I'll be ordering from here as then service is outstanding and range is huge so if u have a suggestion could please only suggests it if its avliable in the UK (ideally from this shop but not essential)

https://www.evanscycles.com

Thanks so much and sorry for a nooby Q.

I'm 5"8 so will be looking at a 18 inch frame o take it?

Thx in advance.

PS reason I can't go further afield is because I don't drive yet....hence the need for a new bike,

I will test ride them before I buy though.

Come back and let us know what you think of them after you test ride them. As it is, they're roughly equivalent. The Fuji is built around a slightly longer-travel fork, but that's about it. There are probably differences in geometry that'll make them ride a little differently, so you really need to ride them and then decide.

Hi,

I would need your knowledge and your help to find a new bike.
I like mountain biking, and I started to buy a bike for about $150
I finally ended up with the Mongoose Ledge 2.1 (https://www.walmart.com/ip/21191086?w...l5=pla&veh=sem)

This bike looks good for the price, it was working fine at the beginning but after a few months of use everything is falling apart...
Also the big problem of this bike is the weight, 36 lbs from what I measure.

Here is what I am looking for,
- Budget between 150 and $300
- Under 30 lbs
- Aluminum frame
- 18" frame

Thank you

If you already bought it, it's a little too late to be asking. If you didn't already buy it, avoid it. For under $300, you really are going to have to go used. Check your local Craigslist and post what you find, we might be able to steer you in the right direction.

I've been away from the mountain biking scene for a long time, but have the opportunity now to get involved again. I have an OLD GT Talera (I think I bought it in 1996) and it needs some new parts - specifically a quill stem and handlebar. The problem is I've been away for so long I don't even know who makes decent parts these days. What would be some good brands to check out? FYI, I like jumps and drops, but at my age I kind of see staying within about four feet of the ground. Thus, I need something reasonably sturdy, but not pro level. Money is a significant factor, but not as significant as safety. Thanks for any ideas, Matthew

I bought it about 1 year ago, now my budget and my needs are different.
I coudn't find any good used bike on craigslist, nor on ebay.

However I found this one, DAWES HAYMAKER 1000
https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tchlink:top:en

I found a review saying it weight about 32+ lbs, a bit better than mine with its 36+ lbs

What do you think about it ?
Is the rear suspension really important ? At least not having it reduce the weight.

As I mentioned above, I've been away from mountain biking for awhile, but not so much that I haven't ridden a few bikes over the past several years, and one thing I've noticed is that cheap suspension remains worse than no suspension. At the pricepoint you're looking at, I'd be looking for a bike with no suspension at all.

Cheap full suspension is a great way to destroy pedaling efficiency, lose all feel for the trail, and generally have a mushy riding experience.

  • Budget: $3500
  • 6'1", muscular 225 lbs, very hard on wheels and suspension
  • Prefer SRAM components
  • Will be used for local trail riding, most of which involves quite a bit of climbing

Suggestions?

Long story short:
used to live in great mtn bike territory and rode lots...
moved to big city, nowhere to mountain bike, got big into road biking...
moved back to mtn bike territory and need a new bike.

Here are 2 that my local bike shop recommended for my budget ($1000 MAX)

https://www.trekbikes.com/ca/en/bikes..._sport/mamba/#
https://www.norco.com/bikes/mountain/...-9/charger-91/

I am looking for something
-Reliable
-Good build quality
-Well designed

I am not concerned with having the most bells and whistles or the highest end components. I would rather have a reliable low end component than a finicky fragile high end component (of course reliable and high end trumps all lol)

What would you pick and why?

I personally like Norcos (must be a border-state thing ) and am meh about most Treks; but in this case, it's a tough call.

The frame numbers show some very telling differences:
  • The Trek is slacker with a head angle of about 69.5, as opposed to the degree steeper 70.5 of the Norco.
  • The reach and stack (the cockpit numbers that really matter) show identical reach for a same/similar-size frame but the Norco's stack is over an inch taller.
  • If you look at the BB drop (another telling 29er number), you see where some of the extra stack height on the Norco came from with 10mm more BB drop.
  • Chainstay lengths are identical.
SOOooooo . . . the Trek is going to theoretically be more stable at speed being a bit slacker and having the custom-crown G2 geometry RS fork (a bit extra trail built in with the larger crown offset); but the Norco gains some back in stability with a bottom bracket lower in the frame but still with decent clearance.

As far as the parts spec, I guess it's whether you're confortable with the house-brand Bontrager stuff on the Trek or getting the Norco bristling with decent Shimano parts with FSA thrown in to flesh it out. All-in-all, myself, I'd lean toward the Norco even though I tend to err to the slacker frame, just because that seems to be the only thing the Trek has going for it over the Norco (IMO).

YukonFX is my go-to recommendation for entry level FS. It is not the Maestro-linkage design but it is a worthy FS bike.

Alright, after searching around with different budgets, I ended up with 2 models, one at $300, the other at $450

Which one would you recommend me ?
Is the GT worth the extra $150 ? I tested a similar model at REI and I really like it, but I am entry level in mountain biking, not sure I will go that often, so I am not sure yet if the extra $150 is useful for me.

neither. they are poor value. buy on your bike online and service it in lbs.

Just seeking some advice and thoughts on these two bikes.

Got a freakin' good deal on both of them, so now have to choose. (Canyons Nerve AL 29 are sold out, so seeking other brands)

It's: Specialized Epic Comp Carbon 29'er and KTM Scarp Elite 29 Carbon.

Pro's and cons etc.?

I'm looking for a used mountain bike...
Here's my brainstormed must-have criteria
1) Full Suspension
2) Aluminum
3) Disc Brakes
4) At least 20-speed
5) Willing to spend up to $900

I started mountain biking at the end of last year, using an older Trek 4500. My friends all have full-suspension bikes w/ disc brakes, and we are starting to do more difficult trails where mine isn't holding up as well. With the bike that I'm looking to buy, I need it to be one that can handle technical mountain trails.

I did some searching online, and on eBay I found one that stood out among the others I looked at..https://www.ebay.com/itm/Giant-Reign-...538#vi-content

There's so many options and I'd prefer to get something that I'm really going to get some good use out of.

What do you guys think?
Is there any models that anyone would recommend?

Can't follow the truncated link; but the Reign is a fine bike. If you can find one in your budget, jump on it.

My friend mentioned to be weary of buying online and had stories of friends buying damaged mountain bikes. Certainly understandable. I was thinking about driving to pick this up to play it safe. The seller lives about 3 hours away.

I also got a tip that Full Suspension is 'iffy' on mountain bikes older than 2008. Is there merit to that, and should I be too concerned about it?
