Guess holw old this bike is:

I know this isn't real vintage, but here is the bike I use as a beater. Well, more as a back up because I never ride it anymore. Anyhow, it will be converted to a trainer (slick tires) for road training next season. The frame is a 17" and the build is about 25 pounds.

Hard to say... the geometry and construction looks very similar to my 92-95ish Peugeot. If the headtube is 1 1/8th I would guess its maybe a 93 or 94? Otherwise I guess 89+

1992 - Frame is my guess. Looks like the Headset, front derailleur(Suntour XCE) date it that far back.

Its a 1987 Douglas that was my first serious bike. It is a little bit small for me, but it climbed really well, and was really nimble. I learned most of my riding technique on this bike, and it has been through many crashes and is still going strong

Nice observation! I even forgot how old the front deraileur was on my own bike

I'm thinking of getting a XTR front deraileur for my Instinct, and moving the XT M760 over to this bike. Think it would fit??

Oh yeah, also thinking of getting these LX cranks. I know the bottom bracket has been replaced around 98, not sure if the BB in there now is tapered or ISIS. Would these cranks work? These cranks are 170mm, and I'm about 5'10" and half. The frame is already pretty small, so I'm not sure if they are such a good idea.

There are still 3 origional parts on this bike besides the frame. Can anyone take a crack at guessing what they are??

THe headtube is a 1" threaded. One of the reasons why I went and got a new bike

  1. Depends on clamp size and cable routing
  2. Those cranks won't work with either Square or ISIS BB's those are Octalink cranks. Chances are you should be running a 175 anyway

The XT FD will work top or bottom pull. I know the multi-clamp fits 28.6 mm, 31.8 mm, 34.9 mm, so I "think" I'm safe. The XTR probably would not work a whole lot better than my XT, but if I can get it for cheap enough, I mind as well get it.

About the crankset, I probably wouldn't bother with the upgrade. The bike is already too flashy with those wheelsets. A nice cranksets will just attract more attention to theives. Afterall, it is supposed to be my "beater" even though I never really ride it anywhere and lock it up.

The levers are Avids and look pretty new in comparison to the frame.. handlebar is a riser and they weren't popular back then... saddle, maybe.. but here's my guess... rear derailleur, cassette, rear brakes?

All right!!! You mentioned the prize is your new Rocky Mountain, didn't you, Ming?

I zeroed in pretty quickly on the seat-post clamp, headset and a few other clues. Pretty close to a spittin' image of the early 80's vintage 4130 Cro-Mo bike I have hanging in my garage (my first 'real' mountain bike and still a beauty).

Good observation! I really liked that bike even though most of my friends think it is a piece of crap. For some reason, I was still able to keep up with them, and was usually faster down rocky descents. Strange eh?

The seatclamp is one of the origional parts I've went through like 5 saddles because I used to crush seat rails like popsicles
