$550 bike for my first bike?

Can't afford anything more expensive right now. For my first bike does this seem ok?

Thanks!

How does it fit you? To me, that is perhaps more important than anything else. A really well fitting bike that is comfortable for you to ride is worth that much. A really cool looking bike that is unrideable for you is a rip off no matter how many dollars off it was.

My stand-by is a hard-tail mountain bike I purchased new for $340 in 1997 (a '95 model that had been languishing for having a large frame, I think).

I don't have any experience with this particular model, but it seems well regarded in reviews...

29er with a lock out fork. You will appreciate that on the climbs. Beware, don't mess with the lock out once you start descending-scar tissue will follow!

Enjoy that sucker.

Looks like a great starter bike. You'll appreciate the 29er's.

Not sure how it fits me, I'll look into this. I'm going to use a fit calculator and then see if the dimensions match. I'm new so don't know too much.

Will the sellers let you test it out?

I'm buying online...so I don't think so. I know the advantages of buying at LBS but the price is just so much better and I think I'll be able to choose the appropriate size.

Why do people always seem to recommend this? I have always left my bikes (suspension and hardtail) fully active and have never felt my energies were being 'robbed' by a little bit of suspension movement on climbs - - even racing XC.

Have you checked out bikes at your LBS's? Being the end of the season you might be able to find a decent deal, plus you'll get a chance to test your rides to see what's a good fit. I just got a Scott with similar components (albeit it's a 26'er, but has a better fork) for around the same price.

Bathwater's got a good point. When I bought the leftover Giant road bike, Bikesdirect could only come close to matching the price. When you take into account all the mods that had to be made to fit me, there's no way a Bikesdirect bike could match what the LBS came up with. I'm not knocking BD, they make a pretty decent product, but you need to look hard before you take that leep.

What modifications do they make?

I am a big believer in getting the bike fitted by an LBS, and since I am such an odd size (a little over 1.9m (6'-3") tall and most of that in my legs) I cannot be sure a bike will work until I try it out. I have never purchased a bike that the shop or CL seller wouldn't let me try out first.

If I were a more "conventional" size I might be more willing to risk it by ordering a bike.
