Much advacement in brake pads since early 90s?
I have 2 Gary Fisher Tassajaras from 1993 or so. The braking isn't as good as it used to be. Today I cleaned the rims thoroughly and sanded down the pads (Shimano M55/T) to remove the glaze. That improved things a lot but I'm wondering if I should replace the pads altogether.
Do you think new, more modern pads would provide better performance? Which pads do you recommend?
Thanks

Swifferman, Nashbar, among other places, has them.
For anyone else watching, what's the opinion of the Aztec2 pads vs. Kool-Stops? According to Deltacycle, who makes the Aztec2 pads, their pads are much better than Kool-Stops, if this page is to be believed.

I 'm a big fan of Jagwire Switchback Tri-zones. I've been running them on my commuter for a while now and they really work very well for me. They're availiable HERE.

Will all of these pads work with my cantilever brakes, or do I need cantilever-specific pads? Seems like if I remove the nuts and washers, they'd work fine, or not?

Bought 2 pairs of red/salmon Kool-Stops today at a LBS and, sure enough, they are MUCH better than the stock brakes. In fact, I had the LBS order more (I cleaned out their stock) for my other mtn bike. Thanks for tip!

Sounds like you got into the sport about the same time I did. (Actually I rode my old '72 10-speed in the woods until I warped the wheels) Maybe I should really be where Ned Overend is, huh?
Anyway, I have to say to you that the disc brake system's are the ONLY way to go. Either the mechanical (Avid or Hayes 1's) or the hydraulic's.... Once you or anyone else reading this try the disc's, you will NEVER go back, trust me....
Bottom line= YES, technology has definitely improved at least this segment of Mtn.Biking. Take advantage of it.....

To be honest, I haven't ridden a v-brake equipped bike much beyond the parking lot of a LBS. While it felt and worked much better than my current brakes BEFORE the Kool-stops, I'm not totally sure v-brakes are that much better AFTER the Kool-stops. Sure, v-brakes provide more modulation than the cantilevers and more force on the pads, but remember that I'm someone who's used cantis for years and is plenty used to the force needed to operate them.
Upgrading the pads is, IMO, a more cost-effective and noticeable upgrade than going to v-brakes would be.

How difficult is it to go to discs from v-brakes? I'm riding a fairly new Giant Rincon and the next higher model had discs but not much else to offer and was way more expensive. It's pretty wet where I live (Newfoundland) and I'd love to have a more reliable brake.

If your bike has disc tabs all you need is a new set of disc hubs. You can use your standard v-brake levers with mechanical discs.

Any pre-2000 bike will either "not" have disc mount holes in the frame, or the holes it has could be non-ISO Standard. That means that the hole positions are too close together and won't fit modern day brake mounts unless an adaptor is used. My '99 K2 Flyin' Monkey is that way, as is my '97 Beast. The disc mounting holes are there, but the spacing is wrong for the ISO Standard configuration. (51mm)
Listen Folk's, if you're still riding a bike you got 12-20 yrs. ago, don't you think it's about time for a new one?
I can't imagine still having to ride my '93 DB Ascent EX everytime I went out.... The brakes on that thing would sometimes go out in a heavy fog.
