need some advice for a new biker

Hi everyone. I'm looking to get into biking. When I was younger, I rode BMX bikes and did a little bit of mountain biking. Now that the biking interest is back, mountain biking looks most interesting to me, but I may also do a little bit of riding on paved trails. I've done a little bit of research, but some of the new technology has me a bit confused. As of right now, I'm thinking a smaller framed bike with a front suspension would work best. I'm hoping that I can get some advice on things I should look for as I shop around for a bike. Here are some details about me:

-I'm 5'5, about 135
-budget is about $300. I'd be open to getting a used bike.

Adkumar,
I am by no means an expert, but the best advise I can give you is to go to a bike shop and try a bunch of different models out. I have 2 mountain bikes and one road bike and they all serve a purpose for me. It almost comes down to what you are comfortable with. I would recommend against a road bike if you are thinking of doing trails.

Hope this helps,
John S

Thanks Cycle Babble. I went by a local shop, and I saw a couple of entry level Treks. I was looking at the Trek 820 there in the store. I saw this pop up. Any thoughts on this?
