Entry level MTB: 2012 Specialized Hardrock Disc or 2013 Giant Roam 3

Looking for a bike that I can ride comfortably on the street and on a trail from time to time to learn basic MTB skills. My ultimate goal is to go into Mountain Biking. Which of the two bikes do you think is best?

What's the price on both of those?

I actually have both of them, one is for me and the other for my sister. I just want to chose one to dedicate to it and not be between the two. I paid about $350 for each.

Well I would go with the Specialized. Of the two, it is the only one that is an actual mountain bike. The Giant is considered a hybrid, and will not stand up over time to much off-roading. The Giant is for mainly road use, with the occasional smooth trail or gravel road.

Do you think the specialized is worthy of upgrading brakes, forks, etc. Or is it better to find a better bike once I need it?

Ride the specialized until you know you want a better bike. For starting out, that bike is fine. When you feel like you can handle more, check out craigslist and see what is out there. I picked up a really nice FS bike for a fraction of the cost new.

If you are looking at upgrades before you have bought the bike, it's the wrong one, just get a bike with what you want on it, as it will be a lot cheaper in the long run. This is especially so for forks and brakes, as they are normally the 2 most expensive parts to replace after the frame.
