Lube Slows You Down.

In a recent article, Velonews reported testing that showed using paraffin on your chain instead of Pro Lube would save you 5 seconds in a 10 mile time trial. If true, that’s huge. Many people are not aware of it, but the only true advantage ceramic bearings have over standard bearings is they allow the use of a lighter grease or oil, which like the chain referenced above, will give you increased performance.

Pro’s take out all of the dust seals in Time Trials for the same reasons.

But a more serious look at these happenings would point to a more devious benefit. Parts without lubricant wear out faster - and that’s big bucks for the component makers!

That is also the true motivation behind lighter and lighter components. Sure they go faster – but more importantly, they also wear out faster!

The gold standard is to have the whole bike to wear out at once so that changing any individual part becomes futile. We are still not there yet, but where there’s a will there’s a way.
