So about the NCR trail: I will be riding from my house to the trail. I'll leave around 8 AM to get to the Paper Mill Parking lot before 10 AM. So far they are predicting 30% chance of rain and a high of 51. In my book 30% chance of rain means it won't rain on me if I am out riding my bike (as opposed to it will rain if you stay home and wash the car. ;)) And 51 degrees is too good to pass up.
Let me know if there is any definites for the ride (before 8 AM on Sun) otherwise I'll probably do a BBC ride. Barry: I can drive and pick you up, it's on the way. Plus it's going to rain in the AM until 10 or 11. Maxine: If you want to carpool let me know. Anyone else....50F in January!! Charlie |

For an optional zigzag; take Lake to Falls and then Lakeside Dr/Woodbrook to Charles St. Note that this route has a bit of natural surface bike path and its a little hard to find the first time. (Sort of thinking out loud on this route.) On the way home I would stay on Smith and on the other side of Kelly take Sulgrave over to Greenspring. And take the roads behind (north of) the Zoo. Wish I could include myself on this NCR biz, but it can't happen this weekend. Too booked up unfortunately. Maxine's new 520 sounds like just the ticket for that trail. I almost bought one of those myself- then considered a Heron (now, they aren't making them any more), finally bought a Kogswell Porteur. I just got off the phone with Charlie and we're going to head off in the direction of DC (due to a wet NCR trail.) We are meeting at Frederic Rd and the Trolly #9 trail, time is sort of lose (~8-9 AM) since it's just the two of us. So Maxine or anyone else wants to join us PM me or Charlie.

Barry and I had an excellent ride Sunday. The weather could not have been better. Rode to DC and back. Didn't actually get downtown but rode some of the bike trails (NE branch & NW branch). Ended in the dark, tired and spent. Barry, I hope the end of your ride was safe and flat:) He actually rode to Catonsville then down to DC and back to Mnt. Wash. Might have gotten a century in, I got in 82 miles. The legs were a little tired on this morning commute but still moving. Hope some of you guys got out there this weekend as I think the cold is returning. Charlie

The cold? It's going to be in the 60s the next two afternoons! I started out late, noon-ish, riding down to Annapolis proper from the Dixon Observation Parking Lot at BWI. In Annapolis, I went as far as the drawbridge next to the marina--drawbridge was up so I turned around. On the way back to the trail, I did some motor pacing behind a car with PA plates. I was able to keep up all of the way back to Route 450. Once back to the Dixon lot, I did a loop of the BWI trail--only 50 miles total for the day. Glad you guys had a good ride. I've always wanted to bike to DC, but I'll wait until the days are a little longer, I think. |
I did 104 miles, 6100 feet of climbing with an average climbing rate 32 feet/minute.
My first century of the year, whoo hoo! I seriously need/want to start mapping out some of the trails south of you Charlie so if we do another ride lets find a trail that's not on the Baltimore Spokes map and ride it (so my GPS unit can map it.) |

(I had to see what Ilchester was all about- ouch!) Came back around through downtown and then down to North Point park for a grand total of 80.5m Delightful weather. Wonderful riding. Can't expect to see any more days like today for awhile. Had to take advantage of it. If I could've gotten my butt out of the house earlier, I would have gone for the century, but it got dark on me. With all of us riding a lot of miles yesterday it 's a shame we could not all ride together.
Greaterbrown: I seldom outride NoRacer. Did you ride on Gun rd while checking out Illchester. We rode up it near the end of our ride. Was not fun, just spun it in the granniest of gears. 4-5mph. NoRacer: Barry rode 100, i got in 80. We should have a BF ride to DC. It will be better when the days are longer. Or ride to Annapolis to DC to Baltimore. Much of the route from Annapolis to DC is complete. That will be a really long day(or a medium day for NR). Charlie, I am sort of shocked that we did Gun Rd at the end there. It was sort of fun watching you go up in the dark looking like a tipsy low flying UFO (real nice light set up BTW.)
While I am enjoying our little splash of fame here it's really good to hear that a lot of us did get out and enjoyed the day. I'm predicting that GreaterB is going to be giving NoRacer a bit of a run for his money by the end of this year. (Anyone that hits Illchester and then keeps going past their house has gotten the bug.) Seriously that sounds like an awesome ride GreaterB! Did anyone else get out and ride? Care to share anything fun or hard about your ride? Sharing ride info is about sharing fun and possibly hooking up with other people who like to join you on a ride. |
I'm glad you guys had such great rides -- I ended up sick as a dog that weekend (I suspect some leftover shrimp fried rice was the culprit, LOL!)

"A SERENE CENTURY," starting from EAST MIDDLE SCHOOL in Westminster, Maryland. MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m. Please note this is NOT the same ride start that we used a couple weeks ago. That was the WEST Middle School. This one is on the other side of town (and, coinkydinkally right around the corner from Paradiso Ristorante--remember the extreme chocolate thingy-dingy). We'll get a peek at Prettyboy Reservoir in the morning, along the very scenic Spooks Hill Road. We'll also travel along lots of "Mill" roads (and that rhymes with hill). Lunch will be at the charming Serenity Station Cafe in Seven Valleys, located adjacent to the York County Heritage Rail Trail and a bike shop!. See http://www.serenity-station.com/. After lunch we'll continue north a bit through Reynolds Mill and take a peek at the Cycle Inn and Lake Williams. Numerous creek, stream and railroad crossings, so best to expect some steep climbs. My guess is that there will be at least 8000 feet of climbing. It will definitely be hillier than the Wellsville One Hundred in any case. Morning rest stop at Wally's Country Store in Rayville. Afternoon rest stop at the Rutters in New Freedom. 101 miles, with short options of 49 and 59 miles. Hopping on the rail trail offers some shorter possibilities, too. |

I am also curious roughly where mile 41-68 is. Isn't Serenity Station cool? If I did the NCR Trail to York I was going to stop there. |

I can't say whether I'll be up to NoRacer mileage by the end of '08, but all those shots he puts up from the DC Rando rides is mighty enticing. Thanks. NoRacer. Keep em coming. |

I see you rode to work but what about the return!! bike to metro?? then kudos as the traffic near 695 and 795 was awful. I drove to help out my parents during the peak of the storm and took 1.5 hrs to drive a normal 30 minute ride. It sucked to be in a cage today AND my boiler only has a band-aid. Charlie |
