Alright, since we're really all bike geeks when it get right down to it, I'll be the geek riding the Nishiki commuter with red panniers. My brother will be on the bianchi eros. Although we may switch bikes I'll be the good looking one.

Blue Trek hybrid. Might be wearing my Bikeforums jersey (version 2) if I can get it comfortable enough (need to snip the elastic)

Well,
Im starting at Leonard Street and West Broadway at 630am with the NYSports Club troup. I get a 'free' blue jersey. Woohoo!

I'll be riding my Commuter bike. A 1994 Purple Rockhopper with slicks and a rack and a left side 1982 Black Cannondale Pannier and reversed bar extenders. The ride is too slow to justify any discomfort with the road bike. For 43 miles, I expect a very long day. So no drop-bars needed.

Grey Metro Helmet. Maybe I'll bring my crank-up radio for kicks. I'll certainly be taking pictures and will post any I take up here for folks who wind up in them!

All I'll say is, I'm pinning a paper card on my right shoulder with a Sharpie "BF, Bike Forum, BrooklynRider" on it.

Say hullo, would ya?

I'll have the discovery short with regular white jersey. And with this bike.

And I decided not to go to the front line. Instead that, I'll wait someplace in mid town to meet some front line riders.

Hmmm. Turns out I'll be in town w/ my two kids. I was going to take them out for a long slow ride anyway... Think I can sneak in? I would have registered but I thought we'd be elsewhere this weekend...

I'd probably take my wife's beater that has a jump seat for the youngest on the crossbar & a trailer for the oldest. I can only get that contraption up to 8mph, so it seems like a perfect ride...

Hmm. We'll see... Might be a bit much for the kids to see me running afoul of the checkpoints...

Anyway, have fun if you're doing it!

If you start near the front of the crowd, how long does the ride take to finish? How about if you're in the middle of the pack, how long start to finish?

Anyone know how long the thing takes in different parts of the pack from experience? I'm doubtful but hopeful a 13-15mph average could be maintained by the front 1/4 of riders. Is this unrealistic?

Thanks

Last year I started about 5 blocks back from the start line (fairly close to the front), rode at a moderate pace, stopped at most of the rest stops, stopped for quick repairs twice, and was over the Verrazano before noon. Even with a stop at the festival, a lucky ferry connection put me back on Manhattan before 1:30
15mph average might be pushing it unless you are at the front. 13 should be doable.

According to my handy dandy marshall sheet - the official start time for the leads is 8 AM. There's a mandatory 48 minute break in Astoria park for the leads and another 10 mins right after the VB. The very earliest one can get to the SI Ferry Terminal is 11:57 for the 12:00 ferry. The leads will be going a strict 15 mph.

By the way - the latest one can get onto the VB is 3:29. I'm guessing they open the bridge back up after 4 or so.

Air is correct.
It's confirmed at last night's meeting that the sign ups had reached the theoretical limit of 32,000, hence the registration closure.
As a result of the high sign ups and expected heavy influx of unregistered riders, the speed of the front will be marginally slowed in Manhattan (maybe 13mph). Does not sound like much, but this will allow the front package of front riding marshalls and NYCPD bike patrol to better control the front of the ride.
The front departure from Astoria Park is according to schedule, but the actual departure from Astoria Park does not happen until the BQE closure is confirmed by the NYCPD and the captian of the marshal team on the Pulaski Bridge confirms the expansion joint overlay is in place.
Warning: on the Third Avenue Bridge, there are gaps in the concrete surface beginning about half way across and continuing towards the ramp going to the FDR. MTB or hyrbid ok, but these will grab a 700x23 tire. The marshal team on the scene is aware and should have this area limited with traffic cones, but . . .

Question: I organized a group of people for the tour, but I'm not sure where and what time we should meet up before the race since this is my first year doing this. Where in Battery Park should we meet beforehand? Or should we just meet somewhere like the NYSE? Not sure how crowded it will be and if we will be able to find each other.

Hi krystle920-

If anything, this event is an anti-race in terms of overall speed. If you are of reasonable fitness, your heartrate will not even be raised for most of the event and you'll spend lots of time unclipped with your feet on the ground.

Yes, you are absolutely correct about meeting somewhere else other than the official starting area. The plaza near 140 Broadway with the huge red cube artwork is also pretty close, yet away from the crowds.

Would there be a lot of crowds around Bowling Green by the bull? I was thinking that could be a good meeting place too.

Last year I was in line by 0640 and as far as I could tell was about 6 block back from the start line. I was at the end of the ride by shortly after 1200. I agree that the ride is not a challenge for those that ride alot but it is alot of fun and it is cool to people watch! Many people decorate their helmets and have tons of fun just being out and about. Be safe and I'll see you all on the streets of NYC. -Scott

PS: I'll have my BF ID card pinned to my vest in the back / upper right too with my SN.
