To ride or not to ride

I really dislike feeling torn between the couch and the saddle. I've been sick and a short re-intro ride on Thursday resulted in rather painful throat and lungs, and a bad cough for the rest of the day. But I was on a bike and I was happy and thankfully the cough disappeared overnight.

It's a nice day today and I feel like I should take advantage of it. I'm out of town tomorrow, and it looks like we have a week+ of rain coming up, so why not ride?!... But I'm feeling so low energy... I could use a 3 hour nap right now and my legs feel weak on a bike and I don't particularly enjoy riding alone and I already passed my 2016 mileage goal... So I'm spending my morning debating pros and cons. Part of me is worried that forcing myself to do it, will contaminate what is usually an all-consuming passion for cycling.

Do you force yourself to ride when you don't feel like it?

If I just have stuffy or runny nose, then a mellow ride usually makes me feel better. But fatigue and weakness is a different story. I would stay home if I felt like that.

Hmm... After all, I failed at staying home. Feels better actually. I think I needed to get out of the sugary, fatty holiday funk.
Once I got on the bike and warmed up, lungs and legs felt infinitely better than Thursday. Nothing epic, but had a really nice, albeit short ride. Chilly out there though. Enough that despite being two winters into cycling, it convinced me to buy actual winter tights.

Glad you went. Sometimes when you don't feel like doing things when you know you really should, do it. Many people don't regret it.

Happy New Year! Feel better!

Get on the bike, if it doesn't feel right go back home and get on the couch. Out my front door I have a long gentle climb that turns into real climb in a few miles. Only three times have I ever turned around after getting a 10 minute ride in. If it feels like I'm getting weaker after a few miles, or like I'm getting the flu, I go home.
