Garmin reception on Kings Mtn Rd and Tunitas Creek Rd

I have a Garmin Edge 500 that has been pretty much flawless. One ride that consistently gives it trouble though is Kings Mountain Rd. I've ridden it 4 times. The first time, there was significant GPS drift, but this last time was ridiculous. Attached is a screen shot of my last ride there. I didn't hit any of the defined segments in Strava (which I use to track my efforts). I used my lap timer because I was anticipating some trouble, but I wasn't expecting it to be this bad.

A buddy of mine has an Edge 800 that seems to track fine up Kings (and Tunitas Creek). My 500 seems to do ok on OLH, too.

Anyone here have a 500 that tracks accurately on Kings/Tunitas? I'm looking at possibly replacing my 500 with a 510 or 800.

Thanks,
Bob

My 705, buddy 705 and buddy 500 can't handle Tunitas at all...constant satellite drop/pickup.

I've done kings 5 times and its only recorded the entire climb once!!! My friend has my old 305 and that works flawless. Glad to hear its not just my 500 having issues. I still can't believe my friends 305 outperforms a 500 on kings.

My old Garmin 305 has never had troubles in that area (or anywhere for that matter).

I sold my 305 to get my 500. Bummer. I guess I'll try the Strava iPhone app to record the ride and use my Garmin for real-time data.

You're just too fast! Mine (500) records King's going uphill no problem, but occasionally gets drift going downhill. But not always. Tunitas is also fairly hit or miss. This was recorded yesterday : https://app.strava.com/activities/46192402

Here's an example of the kind of drift I usually get : https://app.strava.com/activities/41459737

Haha...I wish me being too fast was the problem. It'd be a good problem to have! How was the traffic on Skyline/La Honda at that time of the day? I've gone over Kings and down Tunitas twice (and done only Kings twice). Both times I got to the bottom of Tunitas and was super happy to turn around and climb out because I froze my butt off on the way down. Amazing how fast the temperature drops -- even when it's warm on the Kings side!

Thanks,
Bob

Traffic is great on weekday mornings, usually. Better than weekends, that's for sure.
Descending Tunitas is a fool's errand! What you do is climb the rest of way over skyline to Alice's at 84 and take 84 down. You can BOMB down that hill, the whole way in your largest gear. It flattens out and you slug and slug and slug until you get to San Gregorio and stop at the store there (take of your cleated shoes, please!) for some grub and water, then go North on stage, then 1 to Tunitas and climb back up that way. Then you don't have to cling to the brakes down the steep part of Tunitas, which is definitely hairy and prone to moisture.

BTW, if you go into the Menu/Settings/Bike Settings/ you can change the recording from Smart Tracking to Every Second, and that MIGHT help you smooth out your KMR/Tunitas GPS issues. I think with a larger data set, it might be smarter about tossing spurious data points.

Strange - I've done Kings (down from Skyline) every wknd for the past 3 months and my 910xt has always given an accurate GPS plot. Nowhere near the craziness your plot is showing.

scrubbo: I have a Powertap wheel, so the Garmin is recording every second.

The 510 has GLONASS support in addition to GPS. Might have to get one and see how it works.

Clearly we need to organize a Garmin climb of KM and see how different the tracking is as a scientific experiment!

The wife gave me the green light to order the new 510. I'm going to call Garmin and see if there is anything that can be done about my existing 500. It didn't track nearly as accurately as I thought on my last OLH ride. Diablo looks ok, but given the lack of tree cover, I'd expect that.
