North Cascades Highway, Winter 15/16

Hi all,

At 10 a.m. we're temporarily closing the gates at Diablo and Silver Star. There's two feet of snow up there now and another foot forecast for today. Saturday's forecast is for heavy rain. That's a recipe for slides. The avalanche crew will reassess on Monday.

Answering the question you haven't asked, yet - Yes, this is a little early, but not much. In '06 and '09, it closed on Nov. 7 and Nov. 13, respectively.

I'll let you know what Monday brings.

Happy Thanksgiving!

If anybody was waiting for a good day to ride Hwy 20 - you missed it!
Thanks for the Heads-Up, SF.
Time to wax the skis.

I did the northern tier route a few years ago. I thought HWY 20 was one of the most beautiful roads I have ever cycled on. I'm looking forward to riding it again probably late next summer.

I rode over Washington Pass from the valley floor on Sept 28. And I'll be back with XC skis pretty soon.

One year in March I rode from Newhalem to the end of the road and back, stopped for a picture at the gate at the Ross Lake trail, and saw a few skiers on the road. One of them took my picture.

Last winter I did a little bit of fat biking on snow and had a blast. I'm really looking forward to skiing. And to seeing white on the mountains again.
