Alberto Contadors out of the tour confusion, CF frame, cause of crash? interesting

The reports are that the Spaniard favorite to win the race was going down hill at about 40mph. He hit a pebble or or a hole .... There are pictures of broken CF frame here and there, ... Interesting.

Yep, time to crank up the rumor mill. Regardless of what happened, I'm sorry he was hurt enough to pull the plug. I wish him the best, and hope he can jigger the rest of the season around what should be a fairly quick recovery.

As to the bike, CF frames do break, but usually as a result, not cause of crashes, and whether on the car or ridden and crashed, I expect this to be the case here.

Car ran into carbon bike...that about sums it up. Steel Car vs. Carbon Bike....Car wins...In other news, water is wet. Also, this should probably not be in commuting.

What if I commute home and then watch some of the tour, then can it stay in this forum?

Has nothing to do with the frame and everything to do with trying to eat an energy bar on an high speed decent in the rain in the TdF.

Conflicting reports about what happened.

Most recent would seem to show that the damaged frame pictured in the article above was trashed in a collision while in a bike rack on top of a car. It got tangled with another racked bike on a car heading the other way on the narrow streets.

There are other pictures of the bike after Contador's crash that show his bike basically intact except for the brifters being messed up.

There are no "conflicting reports". There is no controversy, save for those manufactured on the interwebz. Sad, for those who want carbon to asplode, but there it is.

Although, there may have been a grassy knoll near the point where AC crashed ...

Let's get real here. Steel frames don't last forever. But when steel frames get bent, buckled, or dented in a crash nobody starts a rant about the material. I'm not a Specialized fan, nor one of CF frames for most people, but that doesn't mean the material is poor, or that we can draw all sorts of conclusions from something like AC's broken frame (however it happened).

The only difference is that most steel frames are ductile, and fail in a way that points to the cause. CF, being less ductile can fail without leaving a clear trail as to what happened.

The real story here is Mr. Contador and the actual degree of injury, and how it'll affect his season.

Yes CF frames break. Steel/Titanium frames do too. But consider this. I didn't see a lot of Mercedes Benz PR reports When Princess Diana was killed in an accident riding that brand of Sport class vehicle. I dont know what happened and I feel bad for the Alberto for working so hard and he had to quit so abruptly. Specialized seem like acting very nervous and immature, had to issue statement very quickly and had to change it 2-3 times consequently. I don't know.

Likely story. That picture was taken on the same set that the moon landing was filmed on.

Let's start a bikeforums investigation into what happened. I'll Google all of the names of the brand bikes that riders are using in the Tour de France and follow the name brand with the words "carbon breakage" - or "brakeage" I guess. If I can find pictures of all of them with broken frames, we can rule out (that's a scientific approach!) the frame as the cause and move on to accusing individuals that were near the scene at the time of the crash.

Who's with me? Let me first grab a beer.

I read that there was an ozone hole in the Mulhouse area which caused the epoxy degrade and resulted in spontaneous delamination of the fiber weave.

Just saying... do any of you (AF excepted) believe that AC was riding an off the shelf POS Specialized that a civilian might accidentally wander into a Bike Gallery or Non-Performance Bike Shop and ride home? Do you? So... lets try this again, using reasonable amounts of speculation and inquiry. Shall we?

I don't wanna be excepted. I personally find S-works shoddy, to say the least, but this is the TdF.

In the end, it's a "mechanical" failure written into the annuals of history, or?
