Walkway Over the Hudson
In Oct of 2009 a new MUP will be opening to the public. At 212 feet high The Walkway Over the Hudson is a 6767 foot long and 24 foot wide MUP bridging Highland in Ulster County NY to Poughkeepsie NY. It is the longest and tallest pedestrian and bicycle path in the world. The Grand opening festivities start on the weekend of Oct 2, 3, and 4. The bridge will open on the 4th in the afternoon to the public as I'm told. Within the next year it is hoped that the railtrails on either end will be completed and allowing for a 25 plus mile ride. Should be great this fall.

It appears that the website has not been updated as of this post. The last panel was set on Sept 4th. creating a full bridge across. The guard rails should be finished within the next week or so and cosmetic stuff completed soon after. There will be fireworks on the 2nd of Oct. with parades and numerous other events the rest of the weekend. This celebration is in conjunction with the 400 anniversary of Henry Hudson's travels up the Hudson.

fantastic. they should really add another one of these up somewhere around where the lincoln tunnel crosses under the hudson. right now your only options to get into manhattan are to ride over the gw bridge or take the path or ferry.
it would be fantastic to be able to ride over right into mid-town.

It is a terrific Linear Park. My daughter danced as part of the opening day ceremonies, so we got to cross sometime after Gov Patterson and the rest of the dignitaries did their thing. We've been back a few times since in different seasons (great ice flows on the river in early January!), and it remains a thrill.
Construction on the Highland side connection has begun, but the Poughkeepsie side is still being held up by CSX. The rest of the mid segments of the Dutchess trail construction has also begun, so in the end, there will be a 5000' piece missing at the base of the bridge. Too bad, really.
