Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They'd better. If they do some heavy maintenance on the machine I'm flying, they're coming along on the test flight.

Yep.

When I did Functional Check Flights in the T-34. If it was a complete overhaul, engine, flight controls, fuel system or landing gear, the mech. got in the back seat.

We have two helicopters at my work and must say, there's some truth in that.

I can say with a certain degree of pride that I've never had a mechanic that was reluctant to come along on any ops check flight that I've had to do. Most WANT to come along. I've been blessed to work with some stellar AMT's in my career, almost to a person.

For what it is worth, I used to work for an aircraft hydraulic component manufacturer, and we would hire a great deal of former military mechanics to build and test our product. From that, I learned that I would rather hire the worst Navy Helicopter Tech over the best Air Force Jet Tech every time. There is a huge difference between their ability to troubleshoot versus being pick and replace guys.

I can say the same. The reluctance of the mechanics to go flying was the aerobatic portion of the check. They generally did not like that.

Heathie, I'd love to! But...I'm volunteering at Sea Otter today (all day). Coach said "keep it short" for today, too.

Hmm I thought it was just on the weekend. Is there anything worth seeing tomorrow, before we leave town? Say before 1pm.

Today is setup. I always help up in the merchandise building (Red Bull Center) getting stuff on display. It gets me into the festival for the week. Tomorrow is when it starts. All the pavilions will be open tomorrow - clothing, bikes, parts, more clothing, bikes, parts! Road and off road events start tomorrow, too. It's worth coming out, yes.

I'm 61. My patients are shocked, they think I'm 45. Really they just want me to knock down the bill. Staying thin, not smoking, cycling or any good exercise and good genes. Probably the jeans and not smoking are the most important.

Mr H and I are of different minds on this issue.

I want to just be done with it and buy an SRM head unit and power meter, that combo seems to have the best chance of actually working.

However, all wireless power meters as far as I know transmit via ANT+, which is inherently flaky. The Stages transmits both ANT+ and Bluetooth. Bluetooth would in theory be more stable.

The new SRM head unit, the PC8, will have the hardware to accept Bluetooth signals (but not the software). SRM might update the software within the year to activate that BT capability.

Mr H thinks the steps should be: 1. Get PC8 (which will take 2 months to arrive if ordered now), 2. Use with Stages, 3. If problems persist, either tough it out and wait for BT feature to be activated or buy an SRM power meter without waiting for BT. He thinks buying an SRM now locks us into ANT+, even the SRM power meters only transmit ANT+

I am tired from 6 months of troubleshooting. I think the steps should be: 1. Sell one of the Stages power meters now, 2. Buy a refurbished PC7 head unit now + a SRM power meter, 3. Order a PC8 head unit, 4. When the PC8 head unit arrives in 2 months, sell the PC7, 5. If the PC8 does not play nicely with the Stages on the Sparrow, sell that and get a second SRM. My process would solve things the quickest but cost $2800. His plan might solve the problem for the cost of the PC8, which is $600.

It seems crazy that I am ok spending that much $ to
solve this power issue. But I can't tell you how invaluable it would be to have the power data from the Mulholland Challenge going in to Breathless Agony & Heartbreak Hundred. You train for over 2 months then on game day, a huge chunk of data goes missing. Mostly I think my issues are Garmin related. But I think also my entire system is not robust enough. I am just ready to get stuff that reliably works and eliminate every weak link in my chain.

My cranks are 165mm FYI.
