Road Bikes under $700?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I compared the two side by side and they appear to be identical, but for the name.

I think what cale is referring to as road groups are the consumer grade hybrid/mountain groups. Altus, Acera, and Alivio.
No doubt I'll drown in my own incompetence but hey, that's what the Peter Principle is all about. I was thinking 2300, 2200, Tourney (A070), and A050. Though little discussed on these forums, they sell so much of this lower end stuff that it would be a mistake to forget that they even exist. Trickle down just doesn't seem to hit "clay" at Shimano but instead seeps into every group.

Yeah, but those aren't really 4 lower groups relative to Claris...they are just older. Claris is 2400; a remake of 2300 and 2200. In theory, they don't make 2300 anymore. That's like counting 105 three times. Same with the 'A' group. Tourney is below Claris currently - others are out of production.

Oh I get it. They are supported but not manufactured and the Altus, Acera, and Alivio groups still exist. Coming up to speed... slowly..

For the record, I would consider a 5700 to 4700 swap. Assuming that it is equivalent hood ergonomics, shifting and front derailleur as 5800 and as dtrain stated it will probably be around $300 from UK and can unload 5700 on eBay for at least $200. Seems like a nice refresh for that bike. I had 5700 and 6700 and currently have 5800 and I also think its night and day. I could never go back to the old 10 speed shimano

Claris should be appealing to those on a tight budget or expecting to ride recreationally in fair weather. Though only 8-spd, it has brifters, unlike Tourney, and comes as a complete group, also unlike Tourney which doesn't have its own brakes.

I appreciate that you do comment on the smooth shifting and know you meant to be complimentary. Up front apologies if I've come across as too pedantic.
Actually my bike does have the entire Claris drive train and I love it which is why I mentioned it shifts smoothly etc. Shimano does however advertise that as the entry level for STIs.
