Rude roadies or my ignorance?
I was out riding on the SGRT today and had a little encounter with a "pace line." Im riding around 20MPH+ when two guys slowly pass me up then a group of four pass me in a pace line. They were going about the same speed as me but i let the group pass. Then one straggler decides to pass me then get in front of me and slow down so close my front tire almost hit his cassette. I then go around him and the group. They pass me up again and this time im about 5-6 feet behind the last guy but not wheel sucking. The leader then drops and goes to the back (i dont know proper term) i slow down to allow him to get in front of me, he goes in but slows down, as if Im not there. Thats 2 dikc moves from these guys. Then a few more guys from the group catch up and ride on the side of the pace line. It was the worst unorganized line ive seen. I then decide to pass agian cuz Im tired of this. A few minites later two of the stronger riders pass me we ride for a few miles, not hammering but at a good pace. At one point i pass the second guy cuz he started slowing his pace. I pass onthe left but dont say "on your left" cuz there was plenty of room and these guys never said it once while when they passed me. The guy then yells at me about letting him know Im passing and some other stuff. I ignored what he said and rode on. Yeah I know cool story bro.....

If they were going "about the same speed", then how did they catch you?
What you did was you sped up when they caught you and made a nuisance of yourself.
That is quite rude. So add me to the list of people yelling at you.

Perhaps you are right. When i say they caught me I was going 20 and they were going 20.5. So maybe i was wrong by speeding up but why does one pass and slow down? That is quite rude too

It is. But speed fluxuates even if average speed is higher. You just play it cool and let them go. Or you can ask if you can join their paceline. Human interaction, so hard?

The last guy is slowing down because he is fading and barely hanging on. You need to ride up beside him, put your hand on his butt, and push him back towards the paceline.

I have noticed that in these kind of, "I was minding my own business when...", stories that the op is either riding at 400 watts or they were cruising at 20+ miles and hour.

IDK what really happened, but I'm always annoyed when someone passes me, moves into my lane, and then slows down to below my speed. That slow down is rude and, worse, unsafe.

Whoa, I know that section of the SGRT with bums and jagged rocks... loose pit bulls too.
I feel like Mad Max riding through.

Maybe they needed an etiquette lesson. Do you carry a frame pump?

The relative choices we make...or you could have slowed down and let the madness dissipate but right is right darn it!

It sounds like no one involved knows how to ride a paceline.
