I think the rules should be reviewed... as I think they are being misrepresented.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rule #22 Cycling caps are for cycling.
Cycling caps can be worn under helmets, but never when not riding, no matter how hip you think you look. This will render one a ******, and should result in public berating or beating....
The only time it is acceptable to wear a cycling cap is while directly engaged in cycling activities and while clad in cycling kit. This includes activities taking place prior to and immediately after the ride such as machine tuning and tire pumping. Also included are cafe appearances for pre-ride espressi and post-ride pub appearances for body-refueling ales (provided said pub has sunny, outdoor patio
......– do not stray inside a pub wearing kit or risk being ceremoniously beaten by leather-clad biker chicks). Under these conditions, having your cap skull-side tipped jauntily at a rakish angle is, one might say, de rigueur. All good things must be taken in measure, however, and as such it is critical that we let sanity and good taste prevail: as long as the first sip of the relevant caffeine or hop-based beverage is taken whilst beads of sweat, snow, or rain are still evident on one’s brow then it is legitimate for the cap to be worn. However, once all that remains in the cranial furrows is salt, it is then time to shower, throw on some suitable aprés-ride attire (a woollen Molteni Arcore training top circa ’73 comes to mind) and return to the bar, folded copy of pastel-coloured news publication in hand, ready for formal fluid replacement. It is also helpful if you are a Giant of the Road, as demonstrated here, rather than a giant ******bag
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It would seem top me that "cycling activities"...... and "activities taking place prior to and immediately after the ride" is pretty much a catch-all.

I don't always wear a cycling cap,
but when I do, it is a Walz.
Keep riding my friends.

I wouldn't wear a cycling cap while not engaged in cycling activities any sooner than I would wear bib shorts to court.
As part of a complete ensemble, a cycling cap cannot be wrong as long as one is otherwise also entirely in cycling apparel, and gets a pass more often than an ordinary hat in my book. While it is generally polite to remove ones hat indoors, a cycling cap is preferable to exposed helmet hair.

Depends whether you mean a baseball cap per se, or a more generic 'ball cap.' I no longer have a true baseball cap that fits, and I'm not a kid anymore, so the question is moot, but I do wear ball caps on casual days in cool weather. I just think cycling caps are peculiar, flimsy as they are. I might be more inclined to wear a cycling cap in public if I were more inclined to wear tshirts and knit shorts on the street, but that's not me.

What about asses in jeans and flannel shirts and steel everything? Does their insistence on adherance to their standard determine my stature as a cyclist?

Thats the one I struggle with. A lifetime of taking my hat off indoors is at odds with sweat plastered hair at the coffee shop. Tough call.

I wear trucker caps, and I am not a trucker. I guess I am the definition of a hipster DB. I suppose I should start growing my beard down to my neck.

Nope, Buck up and be a man, Bucko. Wear what ya wanna wear. Just don't tell someone else what they should or should not wear and when to do it. There is no such thing a cycling fashion etiquette ... it's just a myth perpetuated by marketing folks and swallowed to by those who think they have to look cool to be cool.

I was reading through "The Rules" on Velominati. "Cycling caps can be worn under helmets, but never when not riding, no matter how hip you think you look."
Velominati ? The Rules
Is this really true? I can never wear a cycling cap outside of under my helmet while riding, without other cyclists snickering and calling me a ******? I like my cycling cap and want to wear it when I feel like it.

I wear a do-rag under my helmet most of the time. I am bald and don't want bugs or sun on the bare noggin skin. But after reading this thread... I am seriously thinking a cycling cap might look rad on my old gray head while having my after ride (outdoor) café coffee.

I wear them under my helmet when it's cool enough or raining. My retirement job is working at an LBS, and we're supporting a big charity ride next weekend, so I'll probably wear one while working if I'm on site rather than back in the shop. Then I'll have to decide whether to wear my team's hat or the replica 7-11 one.

That's different. Cycling, as you know, is very serious bizness.

Quick help needed for Saturday (not this one, the next ) event
I just about completly bald and frequently wear a cycling cap around the house while doing chores outside to keep from getting sun burn, and to wick away sweat.
However I will be going to the Trexlertown (PA) show at the velodrome on Saturday. Can I wear my hat: a. no matter what the weather since it is a bike show/swap meet. b. if I go another time for the races only and there is no show/swap c. if it's overcast and cool and don't really need it to protect from sunburn or soak up sweat
I really don't want to be an outcast or a Fred, so please give me a few guidelines.

i despise ball caps. they're for tools. if i need sun protection on my shaved head, a cycling cap suffices.

Kit doesn't match
From the NYT article mentioned above. "Prices of the cotton Moschino caps start at $310."
