Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hello again! We'll, after all the messing round & paperwork etc, the bike has arrived. I went for the 51cm and managed to get it $160 less than before. Big box, opened it up and all looked good on first glance. Then, the head tube scratch A call to the shop with pictures forwarded resulted in a further $160 in-store credit which I can live with (just need to read up on touching up gloss (black) finishes on carbon frames).

A local offer popped up and was able to buy a full bike fit (Guru system) for just $23 (usually 10 x the price): a bit after the horse has bolted but will be interesting to see what fit I end up with.

The pedals have just arrived and I've popped the seatpost in to find it's a 25.4 x 350mm seatpost: it should be a 300mm one for this size of frame (despite the shop saying otherwise!). It bottoms out on the upper bottle cage bolt with around 6-7" showing above the top tube. I called the shop thinking they would get in a replacement seatpost but, after seeing pictures of it, all they have come up with is "...trim the seatpost off with a hacksaw.. and file it down, marking the minimum insertion line in case you sell the bike in future..."! I've yet to respond. Not something you'd expect to do on a new bike unless you were chopping the weight down.

So, so far, I've not even ridden it!

I would have no problem cutting the seat post if it was bottoming out but I can see why someone might on a new bike. Seat posts are easily replaceable (even the 25.4) so it won't effect resale at all. Waiting around while one is ordered or 5 minutes with a hacksaw and riding is an easy choice for me.

I'm a bit disappointed at their response with it being a brand new bike, especially when they were saying that it was the wedge that was stopping the seatpost going right down and that there was only one size seatpost for this model at all sizes: the 48 & 51cm models use a 300mm, the rest, 350mm.

Looks like I'll be doing it myself as I don't think they're bothered now they have my $$$$ in the bank. You watch: the bike fit'll recommend a different offset or something!

I will get back on here when I've sorted it out and sometime soon with the bike fit results.

I just got a Synapse 48cm . I'm 5 6 30 inseam and the 51 cm Synapse felt too long and unyielding to me. Handling was much more natural with th 48cm. I am going against all rules of bike fitting. Not into changing stems at all to make a 51cm work for me. Small bikes just more fun than one a bit too big.

Well, it's been some time since last on here but I eventually booked & had my Guru bike fit. I managed to get a new 300mm C3 seatpost (very cheap) off eBay. The results surprised me a little: a saddle height increase, more set back; slightly lower stem (but the tall headset crown prevents that currently). The bike matching came up with both the 48 & 51cm models (just like me) but I'm very happy with the 51. I've only done around 30 mile on it due to the really bad weather we've had but it feels fine

I don't feel it too long as it's actually got a shorter wheelbase than my old steel bike and the standover's the same also. I really thought that the fit would recommend a shorter stem or inverting it though. Will get a few miles under the belt soon once these storms stop coming over the Atlantic

Had it on some Tacx Galaxia rollers for the first time (me & bike). Looks like they're going back as the bearing keep moving laterally in there seat in each roller, causing rattles etc. Probably go for the Elite Arion (cheap) one.
