Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Glad youre okay OP.

The guys I ride with are a mixed bag. Some ride helmetless regularly. Some are militant about needing one on. Ive heard everything from "they save lives" to "my deductible is cheaper than these new helmets."

Argue all you want... i'm sold.

I truly feel that my impact was lessened by the MIPS system.

I hit the ground hard and my head "smacked" the blacktop. But instead of feeling I was hit in the head with a 2x4, it was more like a soccer ball. It just felt "softer" than i expected.

I'm arguing nothing. That's for a different thread. I am saying that a deductible is a deductible. Your 'lame' comment was likewise unjustified.

Seriously, you defending that its better to wind up in the hospital because it's cheaper than buying a new helmet?

If not than I misunderstood your comment.

I agree with oldnslow2.

Insurance don't mean squat if you end up with brain damage, regardless of the deductible...

I surely didn't say that but that's not a surprising logical leap you've made there.

I'm just saying that it's a true statement, or could be a true statement. It might have been an exaggeration by the guy who said it but for someone with a lowish deductible (say $100), just about any MIPS helmet will exceed that cost.

No argument outta me.

Agreed. This is whats hanging next to my desk at work at the moment...

I get his point, but at the same time, Id rather a $200 helmet than a $10 box of crayolas each Christmas after a traumatic brain injury.

The only way to prevent a traumatic brain injury while riding a bike is to not ride a bike.

The fact that the OP was even asking if his helmet needed to be replaced indicates he knows the answer.

Whenever there is any doubt at all about critical safety equipment, it should be replaced.

Not true unless you change "a traumatic brain injury" to "all traumatic brain injuries".

MOD NOTE: Forum guidelines require that any and all conversations about whether a helmet is effective, safety of wearing one vs. not, trauma vs. not, etc. etc. be moved to the joy that is called the Helmet Thread in Advocacy and Safety. I'm hoping this thread can stay on-topic so it doesn't have to be merged into the borg collective.

Thanks.

You can lock it.....

Giro already told me to replace it and gave me a 30% off code for the replacement.

I've since learned that if there's any impact, other than dropping it, it should be replaced. I rather be safe than sorry.

Thanks to all that helped and to those that entertained.

Good you replaced the helmet. And to those who opt not to wear helmets, my last crash was on my mountain bike turned "beach cruiser" some few years ago on a July 04 slow cruise on a beach trail, when a drunk teenager barreled out of her line and smashed head on into me. I was okay, but my stiff Cannondale Pepperoni fork was trashed. The real scary thing was I don't remember hitting my head, but later while examining my helmet, there was a really big dent in the foam just over my right temple. So, please consider wearing a helmet each time you get on a bike, as like someone said, a new helmet beats getting crayons for Christmas.

Glad that you were wearing a helmet, glad that you are replacing the one you were wearing.

I've seen several non-MIPS helmets do their jobs in similar ways, so I am not sure that MIPS had anything to do with this positive outcome. That said, it didn't seem to hinder anything, which is worth something!

And don't forget your helmets while hanging Christmas lights this holiday season! You don't want everyone returning your new GPS/power meter/Chinese carbon for crayons after you fall off the ladder without one.

Yes, i've seen some people fall out of the chair during a Horah and having a helmet on would of been a good idea.
