Black water bottles for my new road bike

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i suggest you keep looking and spending more time on it as matching a water bottle to your bicycle is critical and the wrong color can have catastrophic consequences

21oz? Screw that...I'm sticking with the Tacx Shiva 750ml transparent because it holds a whole bottle of wine!

I totally agree... If for some reason I cannot find a water bottle to match my bike, I'm going to sell the bike.

I'm not surprised there isn't a huge selection of black water bottles available. Maybe it is a bad idea.

Black water bottles would look best on most of my bikes, but I stopped using black water bottles many years ago because they heat up the water much more than light colored bottles.

Only if they get to boiling point. Try walking barefoot in bright sun on black asphalt and then on white painted asphalt (sometimes found in parks) and see if there's a difference.

The temperature of the water will become similar well before boiling point so not really sure what your point is?
Bottom line is that water in any color similar material bottle will be very very close in temperature after a short time out in the hot sun/heat that is being described in this post so it really is a moot point unless as I stated earlier, you value cooler water at the beginning of your ride.

I'm not sure this is true. Without sun, sure.. ambient air temperature would bring two bottles of water to the same temperature. If black plastic though absorbs light, and turns it into heat, then water will be hotter than air temperature, while water in a white bottle will not be much warmer than air temperature.

The Zefal Magnum comes in both clear and black.

Magnum 33 ounce Water Bottles (100138461) at CambriaBike.com

How worn do black bottles look when the aluminum cages rub off onto them?

You are correct. Even at steady-state the black bottle will generally (assuming all else equal) be warmer than the clear or white bottle. Exactly how much warmer depends on such things as the relative emissivities of the bottles. There are other factors but they would not add to this discussion.

I was putting hot chocolate into my Polar bottle last year. It would last an hour or so. But, I seem to need a lot less water in the winter than in the summer. So, warm was nice in the winter. Capacity trumps cold in the summer.

Black plus vot days = bad idea unless you want to brew tea after riding for a bit. You'd be surprise at just how hot water in a dark colour water bottle (container) can get in the sun on a hot day. Water in a dark bottle will get quite a bit hotter than it will in a white bottle or a clear bottle.

I use Tim Horton's stainless steel thermoses to keep my water really cold on really hot days.

You could always make a thin black nylon sleeve to fit over your bottle.

Cheers

If matching color is the most important thing,

you could get the black bottle & leave it empty,

or just don't drink from it.

I've got some Elite(?) insulated bottles, in black and white. I fill them with ice in the summer, and mix the same electrolyte solution with hot water in the winter. The insulation definitely keeps them colder/hotter longer, but I haven't noticed any difference in temperature between the black and white bottles. I choose between them for color coordination.

I used black bottles but the heat built up pressure inside the bottle until it asploded into my legs drenching them in boiling hot lava water.
