Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That being said...

I've ridden with relative newbies who seem convinced that they're the targets of unwarranted antagonism from drivers if the car passes closer than the other side of the roadway. The reality is that when you start out you're going to feel like most, if not all, passes are intentionally too close.

As for the verbal abuse, it's also my experience that riders who think that they're doing things correctly often aren't; they don't hold a line, they stop, start, or change speed when it doesn't seem logical to drivers, or they engage in other behaviors that make drivers feel nervous. While pretty much everyone experiences verbal abuse, it's far from a daily occurrence, so if that's what your experiencing you should probably take a critical look as to how you're acting on the road.
Thanks for the reply in the future i will make more effort into putting better spelling grammar and punctuation to be taken seriously on these forums on the subject at hand its not a daily thing 'abuse' maybe once a week but it sucks when it happens i don't claim to know it all on in my second year on the road i am a newbie as you stated but looking at these responses it looks like i have to learn the hard way which is ok i looked at the bike and everything is tight and safe :-) i hope everyone has a nice evening :-)

Thanks

Joe

I'm answering the OP's question and going to give him the benefit of a doubt.....

The other vehicles you're encountering are hostile because of the times you ride, aka, "rush hour traffic". They are either late for work, or getting home. Both are going to be because they got stuck behind a "slow bicycle" and refuse to think otherwise.

I'd change my route to lesser traveled roads before you have an accident and get hurt.

And this.

Aside from making mistakes more often, newer riders tend to be more fearful and amplify negative experiences in their heads. I'd even take it a step further and say I've seen cyclists I was riding with convinced a motorist was hostile when the motorist was clearly making an accommodation. If you go into traffic anticipating battle, that is exactly what you'll find.

In the case at hand, I think the OP might unintentionally be provoking the motorists. If you ride looking scared and skittery too close to the side of the road, some will mess with you when they wouldn't have messed with someone looking calm and collected.

It's interesting to me that after people have suggested that you use punctuation, you still don't. Why?

As for your questions: the bike path thing - sounds more like a "multiple use path", which I agree are very difficult to use sometimes, and you just need to avoid them. In a lot of those cases, you just get yelled and honked at, and have to put up with it. If you ever get yelled at in a place where you can respond, you need to just keep your cool and try to explain why you're not using it in 20 words or less.

The roundabout: I don't know how you're using the roundabout, but my experience is that it is a necessity to take the lane in a roundabout. Even if you're not a lane-taking person, absolutely take the lane in the roundabout. It's the only way to avoid getting cut off. Plus, you'll probably be going as fast as traffic in a roundabout so very unlikely to cause delays and bad temper.

That's about all I can suggest. That and please use periods at least!

Confirmed. Complete ideas and punctuation. I'm not going to take the time to mentally edit your post so that I can understand it.

Wow what a bunch of a-holes here today. The guy is just asking for help and some perspective (remember perspective?), if you can help then get to it, if not why don't you just STFU?

Don't fret, Joe, as there are just as many jerks on BF, as on the road. They usually stick to the 41; but, not always.

Best bet is simply to ignore the haters. I have learned to reflexively smile when people shout at me ... otherwise, I get mad, then I question why I got mad, then I feel bad for getting mad ... screw all that.

Just ride. Take a lane when safety requires it, and forget the small-minded people who are compensating for their own failures by abusing others. Ride with pride ... you are keeping yourself healthier and happier and shrinking your carbon footprint ... and while those idiots cannot seem to work it out ... you are less of a traffic problem if you are a bike they can drive past, than if you were another car on the road.

Good for you for doing what works for you.

Both of my grammars and grampas have passed tho.

Has nothing to do with street riding, still.

We ain't here to spell good, we're here trying not to spill badly.

I'm still learning to handle cars passing me, too. Luckily I can do most of my riding in the country where 10 cars during an evening ride is rush hour. But I'm going with patience and practice will help. Some people are just excellent examples of anatomically posterior haberdashery, on the road and on the Internet. I mentally tell everyone that acts like a jerk in either place to have a nice day, as well. But in the Southern U.S that can often mean something else .
