there use to be some cool shops around where you could just hang out,, round where i live.. but its changed.. i think the internet vs Brick and Morter wars have had a lot to do with it... seems for like car dealerships then a place where you go the get help or a hand on figuring out some bike problem.. its not their fault.. the margins are razor thin.. and the competition is brutal.. but i do most of my wrench work now... or have friends help out...

I stop by at least once a week, usually more, just to shoot the breeze. It's a small community without many businesses but we do have a boutique bike shop that carries some very high end brands. They don't have much bike inventory but people come from hundreds of miles away to get a professional bike fit from the ex-pro triathlete owner. They custom build their bikes to the specific fit and needs. Very cool and it's a fun place to hang out. I support him and his young family as much as possible, often paying a fair amount more than if I went to Amazon.

I was once a week, but now I'm settling into about once a month. I bought my two bikes at the one LBS I like within the first 18 months of my cycling hobby. They were very helpful in teaching me about fit, equipment, riding with a group and general cycling knowledge. They even installed some stuff I purchased on line on my second bike. After that, I had a discussion about purchasing items from him that I see on line. He was happy to offer the items as long as he could match or come close to an on line price. I'd rather support him and his family than someone at the other end of a computer screen.

I paid $50 for a local shop to do a tune up on the older hybrid that I had. Guy in the store reacted as if he hadn't even looked at my bike at all, said it didn't really need much. Bike didn't feel any different afterwards. Pretty sure they took my bike in, held it for a few days, tweaked nothing, or possibly pulled on one cable, and then gave it back to me for $50.
After that experience I spent the time to adjust the front derailer on my craigslist purchased road bike. I buy accessories online.
I did go to the same bike shop that I mentioned earlier for a tire tube that I didn't want to wait on for shipping.
For me, I want to be able to do all the repair that I can so if I have an issue I can fix it in the field. Only a complex failure will bring me into the bike shop.
For a new bicycle? Perhaps? I'm not sure that I need one anytime soon even though I'd 'like' one.

When I need something right away, or a repair that I don't have the right tool(s) to do myself. Otherwise, I'd be like the kid licking the windows of the candy store.

I like having the PI outlet but the traffic getting in and out of there is awful. Plus their prices are not any better than online. Only helpful if you're not sure of sizing IMHO.

Whenever I need something I can't do. Wheel work, bike fit, drivetrain work, etc.
Not for clothing, I'd rather buy performance than spend $$$$ on brand name. Not for accessories, amazon is more convenient than rushing to get to the lbs by 6pm or waiting until the weekend.
I have and will buy bikes from them though. Happy to help out in that aspect.
I'm not loyal to one though. I have one that's really close, one did a great fit, and the other is a specialized dealer.

Guess it depends on what your looking for and what time you visit. I find if you visit the outlets right when they open or after dinner there's no crowds to fight and I just go straight back to the clearance racks to see what's there, its' usually hit or miss but we live close enough to visit several times a month.
