How are you mounting your iPhone?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How are you mounting your iPhone?

How are you guys mounting your phones to your bike? I bought a mount from Amazon and turns out it does not fit my handle bars or stem. I have an iPhone 6s Plus that I need to mount. I know there is one mount that will work but you have to change the phone case and it costs $70 for the mount. What are you all using?

Here's my mount for my 6s-

Seriously though, are you using your phone for turn by turn directions? Is it synced to sensors on your bike? Or are you just using an app like Strava as your only source of ride data?

Personally, I prefer leaving my Cyclemeter app running on the phone but with the screen off in my pocket. I also use a relatively simple stem-mounted computer that gives me HR and speed/time/distance, which are the only metrics I really need during a ride. If I get lost, I can pull over and figure out my route using my phone's map tools.

You can find cheap wired or wireless computers on Amazon and the like if you prefer to go this route. Riding with the phone in your pocket also allows you to run earbuds under your jersey into the pocket so you don't have a wire dangling around, if you use your phone for music.

I keep my phone in my jersey when riding on the road and I have wireless headphones for music. I use a garmin 520 as my bike computer. I need to mount my phone on my bike for when I'm on the trainer using Zwift.

I too leave my phone in my jersey as I have a separate GPS/data device. Are your bars flat or really thick?

Pretty thick. I ride a 2016 Giant Defy Advance 2 that helps.

I use this for mounting my iPhone 6 to my bars while on my trainer.

https://www.amazon.com/Levin-Universa...rch_detailpage

Works fine. My bike has standard 31.8mm road bars, nothing fancy or aero shaped.

How ironic! That is the one I bought and it doesn't fit, my bars are the same size. I will remove the other crap on my bars and try again. Maybe the dims are more narrow closer to the stem.

Ahhhh ok, that makes sense.

I actually had exactly the same dilemma recently then, since I sync to Zwift through my phone. My laptop is on a table next to me within an arm's reach while I ride on the trainer, and I usually have a towel spread over the bars and leave the phone on the towel. If I start dripping too much sweat near the phone, I'll just put it on top of the laptop since I don't really use the in-game functions too often (other than trolling strangers with "Ride on!" over and over, or waving at everyone that passes).

It's a tight fit, I'll admit, but with the shims removed and the bottom part hooked onto the largest setting, it works. I'll admit when I first got it my first impression was that it wasn't going to, but it did!

I'm attaching it to the part of the handlebar just outside the stem, so round and 31.8mm diameter there. Strange if you're doing the same thing and it doesn't work!

I had my Garmin 705 detach from the bracket at 50mph* and go tumbling across the pavement.
I retrieved it, and it still works fine. Just some scuffing on the corners. Screen unscathed.
No way in hell my iPhone 5 would have survived that.

* It was on the motorcycle.

At this point I think we've determined that the OP is going to be going 0 mph (IRL), so it's not really an issue.

How do you like it? I just got an iPhone 6S and it's more slippery than my last phone...plus the Better Half really thinks I should have it in a case. How does the case itself affect how thick it is...and does it go in/out of pockets ok? It comes highly rated. I don't really like having my phone in my jersey pocket, especially in the summer. It's a good way to let it sit in a bit of a swamp. Also, while I wanted a Garmin, I keep hearing that the iPhone GPS chip is better, there are fewer problems, etc...and I only have to charge one device instead of both (keeping in mind I'll always have my phone on my during a ride and charge it every night). Plus...forking out like $300 for an Edge 520 vs roughly $100 for the bike mount kit + extra out front mount to go between two bikes.

Yeah. And that also means it doesn't actually have to be attached to the bike, which opens a bunch of other possibilities.

I have the same setup lol. I would like to have the phone mounted because not only do I use the in-game controls but I also control my Bluetooth speakers for music while riding. LOL the in-game trolling is hilarious! I like sending text messages to random people in the game

I didn't remove the shims, I'll try that. I also have mounts for a flashlight and my Garmin GPS on the bars, which leaves no room for the phone mount. I tried it on the stem but that didn't work. I guess I can remove the light mount if I'm on a trainer LOL. I try it again with the shims removed. Thanks for the tip!

Yep that's the one I mentioned in my OP. I am not interested in changing my phone case and paying $70 for a mount.

Well you need to be able to reach it from your bike but you could use some kind of arm or shelf or something that's attached to the wall, right? I mean if you're running out of room on your bars, and don't want to have mounts shipped from Amazon until you find the right one ...

My quad lock case is very thin. I've ridden 10,000 miles with it and never once had it come off of my bars. I used to use Rokform but found their cases to be bulky and the stem mount was ugly/heavy.

Yes I also use the Quad Lock, with my iPhone 6 plus. Works great, and changing between my 2 bikes isn't too bad. Only slight drawback: I have it mounted on the stem, and when I recently lowered my bar by moving spacers on top, it made it a bit more difficult to mount the phone on the bike. If I move another spacer above, it'll be impossible to attach the phone... But that's probably a problem for all stem-attached mounts though...

Late to the party but I also suggest back pocket and cheap computer or Wahoo RFLKT on the bars (or nothing).

Bikes fall over sometimes and the risk of damage to your phone is high.

TL;DR turns out OP is only using it for indoor training with Zwift, he has a Garmin for outside rides.
