Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wanted-- 2 Used Tires 700C x 28

Hi,
I have two bikes that I would like to try 28mm wide tires on and have asked a lot of advice because the clearance is going to be a little tight and it is a hung jury. Does anybody have a pair of beat up used up really cheap but still with 100 miles left on them $5-10 700C x 28mm tires that I could buy so I would know if I can go ahead and buy new tires?

(Cannondale R900, 50 cm frame 1992, and Lemond Tourmalet 53cm frame 1996)

Thank you in advance.

Dan

I'm gonna go with a "no chance", especially if you have wide rims. Widths also vary by manufacturer too

I have a couple of these in 28mm super cheap: https://www.biketiresdirect.com/prod...otek-700c-tire

Why not just take a ruler to your frame?

Why won't your LBS won't let you mount a tire to check for clearance problems?

The LBS surely would have a bin of old tires.

Our local bike co-op sells used tires for about $5 each. I've gotten stung a few times with tires that had significant damage that wasn't immediately apparent, but you should be able to get something worthy of a few miles.

Even if they don't have old tires, why wouldn't they let you mount a new tire just to check for clearance issues?

Based on the 1989 Cannondale Crit 3.0 frame I used to own, and the 97 Lemond Zurich I currently own, I'd say probably no way on the C'dale, but the Lemond has got a pretty good chance.

If you have some allen wrenches (you should), try wedging them in between your current tires and the undersides of the brake calipers and fork. Those are the places where bigger tires are most likely to rub, so you can guesstimate what will fit by adding the wrench size to your tire size.

Unless you find used tires that are the same brand and model as what you want to eventually buy, there is no point to the experiment. They are all different. Plus the lack of clearance may be in the height of the tire, not the width. And on a used tire, that will be worn down. Bad experimental design gives bad data. You are better off guessing.

Gotta agree here.

As far as used tires go, look at a co-op as was suggested or.. Craigslist. I've bought all my tires on there from mtb tires to road bike tires.
