Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Reading this thread has me wondering...

How do you deal with the urge to urinate while on the road? Obviously, if I must be well hydrated before my ride and during my ride, I will need to stop every few miles to void my bladder. Also, the pressure from the saddle causes me to have a constant sensation of the need to urinate.

I've discussed this before with other riders and they say just to stop in a wooded area. However, I'm very hesitant to do this because, where I live, public urination can land you on a sex offender registry. Just wanted to hear what others have to say on this matter...

I think Garmins lie... or rather, they're reporting "in the sun" temps rather than in the shade - when the weather man is telling you the daily high, that's in the shade.

For me over about 95F I struggle with shorter duration intervals. That's June through August around here for rides after work hours. Power is down a bit and recovery suffers, struggle to hit targets. Longer sub-threshold efforts don't seem to be impacted as much.

I've been doing Z2 and Sweet Spot work outside. And moving inside to the trainer to complete shorter intervals when they are planned (If I can't get out early in the day).

Ditto. Same reason that I have trouble n a trainer even with a bunch of fans.

I typically keep myself hydrated enough to where I don't have to pee all the time but not to the point of dehydration. I also try to plan a route that gives a bathroom option about every 35-40 minutes in the event that my plan doesn't work.

For 30s to 1 min intervals, I think you'll be fine, even if it's max effort. 3' or 5' intervals, you'll probably start to feel the effects. Just increase the rest interval afterwards to make sure you cool down and get your HR down properly. But as always, YMMV.

+1. We're going to cross 100F, each day this week. From ~2pm to sunset is out, for me. Early(-ier) to bed, early to rise.

I don't think anyone should need to stop "every few miles" to pee. I sweat a lot when it's hot, so I'll sometimes go through 3-4 full bottles in a 2 hour ride without having to pee a single time. If the urge does come up, I'll either time it with a store stop to fill bottles or I'll step behind a tree in an empty area.

So long as you're not peeing on a playground full of kindergartners I doubt you'll end up on a registry if someone sees you.

This is what I do, too. Mines set for 15 minutes though.
