So much smoke here today. Ashes all over the parked cars.
I'm gonna try a canister mask on my ride...
Zombie Apocalypse style.

But I have learned also.... how to clean my handlebar tape, which bike to buy, what color it should be, if I should wash my helmet liner, whether to wash my clothes with each ride, how to wash my clothes, with what I should wash my clothes, how to prevent boils, how to prevent numbness, which is the best saddle, that Brooks is the best saddle, that Cervelo's suck, that steel is real, that carbon trumps steel, that steel trumps carbon, that everything trumps aluminum, that I average 30 mph , that I'm too fat for the sport, that Sram sucks, that Shimano rules, that campy is da bomb, that it's guads not quads, and drope not drop, that the stem should be flipped, that the stem should be 1/5th the distance between the rear axle and the stem top below the saddle, that real cyclists ride in the rain, thet super real cyclists ride in the snow, that only idiots ride in conditions of heat index above 110, that I'm an idiot, that despite being supremely irritating at times, that I actually miss pcad and his wit, that Billy should run for president, that Trump truly is an idiot, wait, I learned that on Facebook not here, that despite the inevitable ebb and flow of personalities, of dissension, of irritation at some of these personalities, that I would likely really enjoy every single persons company as we all share a passion for this thing called cycling.

Then cut things short, on account of the air quality.
But we still had fun! And coffee.

Well that was dumb. "I'll get in a quick ride before the storms roll in," I said. About 6 miles in, I looked up and my view looked like that "I like where this thread is going," meme.

Well that was [beeping] stupid. Riding in 97* with a heat index of 105*. I don't know if I should pass out, take a shower, or pass out in the shower...

We do seem to be amidst high achievers on this Addiction thread business. LAJ, Heath, Doug. Well done all of you. Nice people to boot.
Actually, what prompted that was a comment that LAJ made in another thread about one of his rivals calling by after a race and giving props. LAJ said it made him realise (even more) that he has been racing with some very special people.
It all comes back to that respect thing. Respect for the hard work to get among the elite. You don't podium in state events without it. And you don't get to officiate at big events (including Olympic trials) without it.

Revelations come at the strangest times, and yes I was down because, simply put, I was beaten by some better riders that day. But, after he came by, it became a secondary thing. The drive home was much easier to take after that.

Rough day at the Prelims session for officials this morning.
One official was sent off the deck and instructed not to return for the remainder of the meet.
One of my fellow Chief Judges who is getting an Evaluation was relieved of the position and the Evaluation.
No, neither was me.

The official sent home was not standing at the edge of the deck, between the starting platforms to observe the swimmers in his jurisdiction. When he was "coached" on what to correct, his response was "I'm not going to stand up there". He was coached again and we got the same response. At that point, he was done.
My fellow CJ simply not prepared for the Evaluation. She just did not have enough experience to be ready. In addition, there were some aspects that she just did not know. I sat and watched her struggle on how to assign 10 lanes between four officials. As much as I hated to see her struggle, I had to let her try to figure it out for her evaluation. After a period of time I helped her, and the officiating team out. But, it was a painful few minutes and I hated to see her struggle.
