Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So much smoke here today. Ashes all over the parked cars.

I'm gonna try a canister mask on my ride...

We had to change our route, on account of it being ablaze.

Then cut things short, on account of the air quality.

But we still had fun! And coffee.

Well that was dumb. "I'll get in a quick ride before the storms roll in," I said. About 6 miles in, I looked up and my view looked like that "I like where this thread is going," meme.

Minus the tanker, obv....

It all comes back to that respect thing. Respect for the hard work to get among the elite. You don't podium in state events without it. And you don't get to officiate at big events (including Olympic trials) without it.
Very nice post, @Rowan, and thank you.

Revelations come at the strangest times, and yes I was down because, simply put, I was beaten by some better riders that day. But, after he came by, it became a secondary thing. The drive home was much easier to take after that.

Rough day at the Prelims session for officials this morning.

One official was sent off the deck and instructed not to return for the remainder of the meet.

One of my fellow Chief Judges who is getting an Evaluation was relieved of the position and the Evaluation.

No, neither was me.

Very well done. I hope all the dismissals were warranted in your eyes. I say that because your eyes seems to be working just fine. Good job!

Just one of those days or was there something that contributed to the difficulty?

Yes, in both cases the actions were warranted,

The official sent home was not standing at the edge of the deck, between the starting platforms to observe the swimmers in his jurisdiction. When he was "coached" on what to correct, his response was "I'm not going to stand up there". He was coached again and we got the same response. At that point, he was done.

My fellow CJ simply not prepared for the Evaluation. She just did not have enough experience to be ready. In addition, there were some aspects that she just did not know. I sat and watched her struggle on how to assign 10 lanes between four officials. As much as I hated to see her struggle, I had to let her try to figure it out for her evaluation. After a period of time I helped her, and the officiating team out. But, it was a painful few minutes and I hated to see her struggle.

One obstinate official, one official not ready for the position at this level.
