Hi, just got my Sunday ride taken out of my hand by a muggler that simulated crossing a corner not seeing me, making me slow down, then suddenly got to my side and strongly kicked the bike, I was close to avoiding it but eventually fell of the bike (clipped in for worst) and intituively ran so he could not take the bike. He was asking me to give him "my stuff" (hard to translate 100% accurately) and simulated grabbing a gun from the back of his pants, once I saw there was no gun, I (recklessly, not proud of this) confronted him and told him I was not giving him **** and that a police car was coming behind him. Luckily he bought the bluff and left. I don't think most of you that read this have to ride through areas where this is the concern, I do and besides the scars, pain and anguish that today left me, I will probably have to start taking the bike with my car and go from a populated place in the road, far from the city. However the main point of telling this here (besides steaming a little) is to ask you guys what and how should I check my CF frame, to be sure it's still safe to ride, since when I briefly saw it after being carried home by a friend in his truck (phoned him) it seems that my body, the left pedal and handlebars got the hit, but I saw a little scrape on the right side of the downtube, close to the forks. This is my only road bike and I'm not in a position to buy a new frame (could only buy the one I have thanks to a friend bringing it to me from the US, a similar bike (Ridley Fenix with force22) is about the 4k plus price range here.

Will be attaching pics later, but maybe there is a DIY inspection to perform or is this LBS specific job.

Short of having it scanned, you can do a tap test - grab a coin and tap around the frame. If the sound changes really noticeably, you might have a problem.

Your boldness was admirable. I am not totally disinterested when I say that. I once also confronted a robber and won. In my case it was a prostitute on the street in NYC who grabbed me in a bear hug as I was walking by and took my money clip out of my front pocket. She must have seen me pay the cab that I had just exited and knew where I kept the money. Anyway, a few steps later I realized what had happened, turned around and demanded my money and clip (nostalgia value) back. She hesitated, then pulled it out of her bra. Didn't want a scene on the street, I guess. Just be careful. When I told my wife about the encounter, she was really pissed about my recklessness.

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Worst case scenario carbon can be repaired. I had a crash on my Dogma and damaged the top tube. LBS hooked me up with a local guy who did an incredible job repairing it as well as matching the paint job. I know where the repair is but if you didn't know about it you would be hard pressed to spot it.

On a more serious note ... well done. Nothing wrong with standing up for yourself and your stuff if you know the situation is probably survivable.

As others say ... either take it to a shop, or do the tap-test and just enjoy riding.

Thanks all for your answers, gonna be tough to find a capable LBS or mechanic here in my city, so I will try the coin method and check it later, I just spotted the pedal and rear QR being badly hit, and the brake caliper displaced (front one) so I really hope the frame is ok, will take pics of the bike once I´m able to wash it if something seems suspicious.

To the poster that praised my actions, I disagree, I understand where my reaction came from (not being able to replace the bike that helped me be healthy again and enjoy working out on 4 /5 hs long rides etc) but I´ve had a baby 8 months ago and she needs his father, so it was actually reckless and wrong IMO not to have let him have whatever he wanted and just go.Anyways off course I´m happy it played out luckily well in the end, but I honestly Wish I would´ve been able to think before acting.

Once again thanks all for your help, and I hope my body heals so I can start figuring out how to get to my ride´s roads safer.

The episode occurred in front of the hotel we had both stayed in over the weekend. She had just left to return home to Houston. I was staying over for a conference starting Monday. I thought she would be interested in the habitues of the neighborhood where she had been staying. Of course you are correct.

Just don't spray other cyclists if you are doing group rides.

You talk about being "clipped in", but you need enough practice that you can intuitively get unclipped and extracted from the bike in an emergency as easily as if you were riding flats.

I hope the bike is fine.

wow man, glad you're ok! take it to a local shop and have a good tech look at it.. The tap test works too (use a penny)

When I was growing up, we lived in a not very nice neighborhood. Parents taught us never to flaunt anything at all. Do not show or let anyone know what you have. Never ever brag anyone, never trust anyone To this day I still follow these lessons specially telling others what we have.

Otherwise, will just be a matter of time the bad ones will burglarize your house and worse yet......someone can get hurt.

So we never rode our bikes in the 'hood'. Put it in the car and drive somewhere else.

Thanks all for your words, finally got some courage and went to inspect the bike, front derailleur was not changing rings but a cable tension adjustment fixed it,

I´m attaching a pic from the QR reion on the rear wheel, there you can se the QR lever´s hit and a rare scratch on the frame (tbh I´m not 100% sure this is new or was already there) but wanted to ask, if the coin test on the frame passed, is this reason to be worried or should it be ok to ride this frame (finger is better and skin is healing so I´m getting the itch to clip in and ride!!!)

I'd take the wheel off and look closely at the drop-out for anything out-of-the-ordinary. That little black scuff on the frame looks pre-existing and innocuous.

I'd say it looks fine from this picture...
