Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hard to do in day?
If you're going up McCowan, you'll travel a bit extra, definitely doable in a day. I think the distance might be a bit exorbitant if you're not starting from where I live.

It'd be like 160km+ round trip from downtown core.

Join us for the Annual Bike Week Breakfast at York University on June 8th

Smart Commute North Toronto, Vaughan, in partnership with Security, Parking and Transportation Services, CSBO, York University, is hosting the Annual Bike Week Breakfast to celebrate cycling. The event will promote cycling as a commuting option for those who are interested in learning about commuting by bike to the York University area and say thank-you to those who already commute by bicycle.

When: June 8th 7-9:30 AM

Where: Patio South of the Ross Building

What: Meet with cycling enthusiasts while enjoying a complimentary breakfast of coffee, juice and bagels from Great Canadian Bagel.

At this year’s bike-week breakfast you can:

Help improve cycling infrastructure
Fill out a survey that will be used by campus planners to help improve cycling on York University campus
Give feedback to the City of Vaughan on their new Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan Study
Have a bike mechanic from Cyclepath (North York) examine your bike, make general repairs, and give you advice on how to keep your bike running smoothly

Take a tour of campus and check-out York University’s existing cycling infrastructure and new developments on campus (Tour will start at 9AM)

View Don Sinclair’s video-based art from his collection “Oh those everyday spaces” that vividly captures the experience of cycling in Toronto
If you are planning to attend, please RSVP by email to oharac@sc-bc.ca (this will help us know how much breakfast to order). You will be entered into a Prize-Draw to win a $25.00 Cyclepath (North York) gift certificate. The draw will take place at 8:45 AM on June 8th.

Those who do not RSVP are certainly still encouraged to attend!

Don't use T-Dot, please. It's been destroyed by a guy named Shawn Desmond and Cragslist. Worst nickname for a city ever.

Sigh.

Anywhere North and East of Bayview/Elgin Mills will get you rural/farmland area. Another fast way out of the city is north on Keeles, north of highway 7.

From there you can go to Musslemen Lake.. Mount Albert. Stop in Goodwood. Whatever you want.
Excellent suggestions. Mussleman Lake is a great area.

I live at Bathurst and Bloomington, in Aurora. Great country roads wherever I go.

East to Mussleman Lake and beyond, West through King City and Maple, then North through Newmarket and into the Holland Landing Marsh area.

Favorite road is Weston Road. Hilly through King City (though not as hilly as my Angels Crest ride ), then East on Aurora Road/St John's Sideroad. Quiet riding for miles.

I've even taken Aurora Road West all the way to Caledon for my local metric century ride.

googlemaps is a great way to find new routes. Click the Satellite option to see an actual satellite image of the roads. You get a good idea of whether it's a busy road or a quite country road.

You might try some of the Toronto Bicycling Network rides. Probably give you some ideas.

www.tbn.ca

For just leasurely cruising on weekends, I like to follow the Don Valley paths south, then east out to Victoria Park (I think). Then I can cut south down to the beaches, and follow the lakeshore trails west, then close the loop by following the don river trails north. Relaxing way to spend an afternoon.

I've thought about it, but never tried it. Don't think I'd be ready this year for a double. I am preparing for a few single century rides this year though.

Hi all,
I will be visiting Toronto from June 3 to June 11 and was wondering if I might be able to
rent a bike and get a ride or two in.

Does anyone know about a bike shop or shops that would rent a road bike
in this area: Westin Harbour Castle One Harbour Square Toronto. I will staying at this hotel
from June 3 to the 8th.

I will then be staying at The Court Yard on 475 Yonge Street from the 9th to the 11th.
I figure I would give Cyclepath a try.

I appreciate any help, thanks!

so far 18 of you are registered.

Good luck!

Actually, my parents are in Welland. Maybe I'll tag along for the front half of the ride? Single Century only?

I'll have to think about that one.

Hey gang...thanks for posting this thread. I am currently living in New Jersey USA and will, more than likely, be moving to Burlington next year. I will surely be looking for places to ride and this gives me some nice ideas. I will discuss them with my girlfriend (who does not ride but knows the areas well). Who knows, perhaps I can talk her into getting a roadie and riding with me.

Cheers,

Brian

Quite honestly, it would be great to meet you. I love your posts and your flat out bluntness on many of the issues raised in the great BF's. I may not always feel the same way, but you are not afraid to state your opinion. I love that.

Hope the move goes well and you will enjoy riding in that area, guaranteed. It is really nice.

Further to the bike routes North to Lake Simcoe: I live in Sandford (just north/west of Uxbridge) and my usual 60+km weekend ride is North up Conc. 3 past Zephyr and straight shot to Lake Simcoe at Sibbalds Point. Very light traffic, smooth roads and some killer hills. I've hit over 70km hr on a couple of occasions on the hill in Zephyr. This is a popular route for Newmarket cyclists, I usually encounter a couple of other riders either way. Conc. 3 is east of hwy 48 and I would take McCowan or Warden up to Sandford Sideroad or Ravenshoe Rd and then head North. Nice rides up here around Stouffvillle, Uxbridge, Udora, Sunderland etc.
One goal I have this summer is to ride the Lake Scugog Century, we'll see if that happens or not....
Hope to see you around, I'm the goof on the white/red LeMonde Reno.
