Ride Report: "Swett-y Half Century"
Great day for riding in the Bay Area today. Started around 7:30 from the Park & Ride at Page Mill and 280, out Arastradero and Alpine, then climbed Old La Honda East (where I scored another personal best, a full minute faster than last time!). We were not feeling particularly speedy, so we decided to take the scenic descent down Old La Honda West, then on down highway 84 where we encountered some mist, but it was brief. We continued out to San Gregorio for a brief stop there to refuel, then on up Stage Road to highway 1. A couple of quick peeks at the ocean before turning onto Tunitas Creek Rd, then up, up, up! Actually it was not too bad, there's only one section of Tunitas that was a little harder than the rest, but most of it was an easy climb, and very enjoyable with the shade, cool weather, etc. At the top, we still had some left in the tank and decided to detour onto Star Hill Rd, then up Swett road which has some nice steep (but short) pitches. Zoomed down Skyline to 84 E for a quick descent, then back to the car via Portola, Alpine, and Arastradero.
Summary: 52 miles, just under 5000' of accumulated climbing. 3:39 ride time; 4:00 total time. Elevation profile attached.
Neither of us brought our cameras, but if you're curious, there are some pictures at the Chain Reaction bike store website of a very similar ride. Of course, nothing compares to actually riding it though

'nother,
That's a great ride. I don't know how clear it was up there today, though. On a clear day there's beautiful view of Half Moon Bay to your left through the trees just after you get over the first steep pitch on Swett. It's hard to believe looking out in that direction that you're probably only 10 miles from downtown Palo Alto, as the crow flies. Nothing but redwood forest down to the ocean. Makes me appreciate living in the bay area evey time I do that ride. I'll be doing pretty much that same ride tomorrow, except we'll skip West OLH, and descend directly down Kings Mountain Rd. from the top of Tunitas.
