Not mentioned. There is hardly any actual bike talk over there.

My rides are continually getting gooder. I'm really liking that my 2-hour course is now closer to an hour and a half. I can attribute my progress to getting a little stronger and a little lighter, though I'll take some of the pixie dust that you're using, too.

I think it's that time of year when we all get a little stronger. Be it more time to ride, better weather, more structure, more races, whatever. I've been stronger and lighter lately as well. Spring has sprung.

Don't know about wearing, but you can still eat them even if the "Best if used by" date has come and gone.

Before moving out here, I did the bulk of my riding in Merida. Many people thought it foolish, and possibly it was. I got a rush from it because all of my senses were on high alert all the time. My ears were the eyes in the back of my head, and on the side of my head. I could not afford to be distracted one whit. Out here in the village, though the traffic isn't as heavy and there are no buses or taxis, people still make moves that can never be expected. For years I've resisted re-installing my Air Zound, but am on the verge of doing it. And hope that I don't have a hair trigger with it. It is very easy to offend and insult with one of these things.
Thus the earbud post.

I don't want to pry, but I was always curious to hear why you stopped riding.
And yes, head injuries are no joke. My wife's grandfather was a very healthy, active older guy and had a tumble while skiing and bumped his head. He kind of brushed it off, finished his day, went home and then got dizzy. He was hospitalized and died shortly after.

About two and a half years ago now I was training with my old tri buddies after work one day. They were much better cyclists than me (the ones relevant here, anyway), so I could only hang with them by drafting like whoa. That day, for the first or second hot lap (three miles or so per lap as I recall), we entered the first roundabout and I started with a slightly bad line, so I got more aggressive as the turn inverted. That meant I actually exceeded my lateral grip, the bike started going out from under me, I yanked it back to vertical but overdid it and went down on my other side. Road rash, cracked helmet, and I didn't think I had a concussion at first but apparently kept saying the same things over and over, and my memory of it now is like thinking about a movie you saw decades ago and can vaguely remember snippets of. The host's wife was actually a nurse at the north Austin hospital, so she took me to the ER but by then I was asymptomatic so they didn't think it was worth an MRI.
Thought I was ok, until a week later at work I drove the group to lunch. Got into the parking lot of a restaurant/ strip mall I went to rather often, and suddenly everything went swimmy in my head as I tried to figure out which direction to go to get to the restaurant. That was scary. Recovered from the orthopedic stuff just in time to do the half-Ironman I was training for (and actually did pretty well at), but tried a ride the next spring and just was panic attacky the whole time. Never set tire on pavement since, and don't really feel the need.
Now it's all about getting to Boston, so I can run it in an Eli jersey. And that's why the plan is currently to do the BMW Dallas Marathon, and if I don't quite do it there I'll go do the Woodlands. Austin is much too hilly for a guy like me to qualify at; those other two are nice and flat. There are a few others I could use as well if necessary, but those are the best candidates.

That climb was way oversold. It was nothing.
Race was totally uneventful. Someone attacked on the first lap but he was caught quickly. Second and third lap were slow as ****. With like three miles to go I decided to attack right before the steepest section. I think I overdid that initial attack, hit new Pmax for the year and everything (893 watts .) Got some gap but a few quickly caught up with me. Couldn't hold on to the eventual winner's wheel, then hung with a group of two, but couldn't keep those wheels either. A few more passed me and I got seventh place in the end. Not bad I guess. Hit power PRs for 1-5 seconds, 1 minute, and all the way from 4 to 10 minutes. Guess that finale was hard after all . In retrospect, I should have waited until after that steep section, pretty sure that would've worked better. Was a fun weekend all in all.

Today I learned there's a poster here with the username Doug5150.
@Doug28450, he's in Illinois. What's up with Midwest Dougs and random number generators?

Never stop riding! Just get an MTB. I hear they have good trails around you.
The likelihood of injury on a MTB is higher, but the injuries are much less severe unless you're doing crazy stuff like redbull/downhill (none of that around Austin that I know of). Mostly just scrapes and bruises. Some a little worse, but I don't know anyone at this point who ever got injured enough that they didn't heal up and get right back on the bike.
I really don't miss the cagers at all.

If I did have the urge to get back on the bike, it'd be for gravel. On a fat bike. Nice and slow. But no, running is good for now.

PGS supplements the GPS that came with my skull. My mom was terrible with directions. From an early age I would often have to find the way whenever we drove somewhere. I had a long bus ride during my elementary school years. When we would have substitute bus drivers I would sit in the seat behind them and guide him through the entire route until my stop, which was one of the last.

OK, maybe I lost a little impetus halfway up Mt. Doom.
