Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New 105 Groupset - Changing shifters

I suspect this is a really dumb question . . . .

But is there any reason to think that it won't be straightforward to switch old-style RS505 hydraulic shifters to the R7020 version?

Thanks, JW

That is actually a very good question, not dumb at all. I saw this: https://www.cxmagazine.com/shimano-1...cal-first-look
when I did a bit of searching. Are you only going to buy the shifters? I have no idea whether they would be compatible with your current callipers, but I greatly suspect that they would be. As for shifting compatibility, I have no doubt that they would work very well. I also suspect that Shimano would like to have an integrated approach to what may be the component group that will generate the most income for the brand. I sometimes have to slap down my inner snob and tell it that those "superior" groups are not as great as they make themselves out to be

It would be pretty dumb for the bore/stroke to be significantly different, so I can only assume that the calipers will all be compatible.

I have installed hydro brakes, but I haven't removed them, so I don't know how beat up the hoses get. Best case scenario would be that the olives and nipples are in good shape and you just have to add fluid and bleed the system. Worst case would be new hoses and fittings (not expensive) and refilling/bleeding the system. Probably not more than a two beer job if you're mechanically competent.

Shimano has a detailed compatibility chart online: 2018-2019 SHIMANO Product Information Web
It's already updated with R7000 details. It looks like you'll at least need to change the brake hose kit, and _maybe_ the calipers, depending on which ones you've got.

The R7000 group was released today, there's some on ebay. But I didn't see the hydro shifters/calipers yet. I also have RS505 shifters and am thinking about replacing the whole group with the new stuff. It's priced pretty good. If you wanted just the 7020 STI's I see no reason why it wouldn't be compatible.

Just saw that chart so maybe it won't be compatible. Unless they're just trying to make more money.
