Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Inadequate training?
A car driven by an 18-year woman entered from a slip road on the opposite side of the road. The driver, who had passed her test just four weeks before, apparently lost control of the car and crossed into the lane where the team was riding, hitting all six riders.

This deeply shocked me as i have a personal friend riding in that team, luckily she wasnt listed so im hoping that shes fine but i havent heard from her yet so im still waiting.

Edited: Since the topics were merged i got rid of part of my original post... God i still cant believe this happened

Second edit: Finally heard back... she was one of the three team members who wasnt riding that day... slight relief for me but still such a tragedy

I hope lil' Miss LostControl is wracked with guilt, and suffers a lifetime of mental anguish.

Unfortunately, most of these idjits will just rationalize away any RIGHTFUL GUILT they feel by thinking that the cyclists shouldn't have been there in the first place.

A terrible loss. A young rider killed. Two others fighting for life. Other riders also badly injured. Their parents, family and friends are suffering terribly today.

Perhaps it is some small bit of consolation that these young folks were struck down while doing something they love. Staying home on the sofa would be a safer life, but talented athletes are not the sort of folks who run from the risks of the life they love.

It's a terrible tragedy and a great loss to cycling - for now and the future, accidents like this only encourage parents to shepherd their children into what they perceive as less dangerous pursuits.

This is a horrible tragedy, and my prayers go out to all of the Aussie community here in the forums. And while this is a terrible thing to happen I wouldn't be so quick to heap scorn and anger upon the young driver. It is a fact that accidents do happen and without details we do not know what caused the accident nor have we seen the road where it occurred. I would hope and, indeed thnik that she feels terrible about what her actions caused but I do not wish wish her a lfe of endless guilt like Bikepacker67. The sad fact, again, is that ACCIDENTS do happen and sometimes they are tragic.

This type of stereotyping is the same type that you do not like to hear coming from drivers about "idiot cyclists." Knee jerk reactions do no good at all in these situations. I hope you never have an accident in which you are at fault...glass houses my friend.

Nowhere in your post did I read anything about sorrow for the cyclists and their families. Misplaced anger will surely be your undoing.

The anger is placed squarely where it belongs, on the perpertrator.
Accident my ass. That's a cop out.

Well you may be right, but without having seen it or without having the necessary details I will not jump to a conclusion, unlike you.

May I ask you what it is that you personally have against the driver, or is it just drivers in general? I saw nothing about the use of excessive speed or careless driving...or did I miss something that you didn't?

Perhaps scary has never done anything in his life that has been wrong or has effected people in a negative manner. Accidents do happen all the time and having to drive alongside cyclists when one has just gotten their d/l can be very nerve racking on a teenager, especially if she realized who they were. It very well could have been, the old think about failure and its bound to happen + teenager new driving jitters. Without actually being there I would hope I never had such a negative outlook on the person who comitted the accident.

I'm sure she woke up that morning with the express intent of running over a team of cyclists........Until youknow all the facts, my friend, refrain from such juvenile banter. The driver may be at fault, but I'm confident there was no intent.......You sound like the "Vigilante" type to me.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the victims, their families, AND the driver.

Actualy after reading your post again. I will refrain from giving you the benefit of the doubt. You are an angry man and I would hate to share the same road with the likes of jerks like you

It must be nice to have such clarity of thought and the ability to view things from a distance with such dispassion.

I have read most of this guys posts (bikerpacker67) and most of them are, at best, confrontational, and, at worse, absurd. I hope he never has any kind of accident in which he is at fault.....then whom will the blame fall on?

Wow. I am so sorry for everyone and anyone affected by this. It's just terrible to hear that kind of a story. I'm really at a loss for words right now...
