Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I used to own and autocross a 1990 Mazda RX-7 Turbo. After blowing the engine, spending $3500 to rebuild it myself and still not managing to get it to run right, I sold the thing for a huge loss.

I could own a garage full of Pinarellos for what I dropped into that stupid car. But when it was running, it was a blast.

I hear you, full-time job and toddler don't leave much time. At least I had a chance to sit in a couple of weeks ago, a small combo. Yep, music is my other hobby and wish I could give it more time. BTW, great avatar.

Did you catch Greg Lemond on the fly fishing show on Outdoor Life last night? He was in New Zealand and they were catching some monstrous browns.

I learned to fly in my 20's, got an instrument rating and flew a Piper Archer all over the place. The I had a pneumothorax in April and that put the keeebosh on that.

I still like to make my own furniture in my garage/woodshop, but this year I have spent an incredible amount of time on my bike.

I missed it. Couple of guys told me about though. New Zealand is home to some of the greatest fly fishing on this planet.

i was into building and painting RC cars as well, and it actually turned into a business. when you mix the painting end of things with a huge ***** for race cars and things related, it can go places. i still tinker with the RC cars on a much, much smaller scale, though(no pun intended). but all the money wasted on that hobby would have netted me a whole lotta bike stuff.
i don't count the motorcycle racing days or driving academies. that's all stuff i wouldn't give back.

Flyfishing has been my obsession for years. Play a little guitar, and harmonica. I now think that cycling my over take my spending on flyfishing, as I already have enough sage rods, simms waders and boots, and ross reels to last a lifetime.

Women, I spend way too much money on them. I used to be addicted to video games too. And I still spend a lot of money on computers, especially Macintosh, as I'm a software developer.

Recent former hobbies were astronomy and astro-photography until they started cutting into my regular cycling routine. As a matter of fact, I'm still on a waiting list for a particular scope......been 6 years which is normal waiting period coming from this company... I'll most likely give up my spot when my time comes...

I was into dirt bikes as a late teen. Then came cycling. That got replaced with R/C helicopter flying until I turned 30 or so. Then I just got back into cycling again. I also have a street motorcycle now but it is more for commuting than a hobby. If I was only rich I'd do all these simultaneously and add a few more.

Played Everquest for years, then World of Warcraft. Will definitely try Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. I really haven't gotten into the video game scene like I did before cycling/running.

I also am an avid photographer, but since its part of the paying job, I can't claim it as a hobby anymore.

Auto racing, actually drag racing and autocross. You want to see a money pit try it... thousands later you may be on the race course, until you blow a head or crash (the later never happened to me but to friends).

I love photography, expecially when combined with sports and nature.

Skiiing (alpine, telemark, randonee, lift-served, backcountry, you name it). Hiking went on a severe decline after moving from Boston to Columbus (I'm 4 peaks shy of the 48 4000'ers, and got a number of them in winter, too!) Bridge and poker have been on the outs for the last 6 years. I used to do nothing but play cards, but after leaving law school and entering the work world (and spending my days inside, working) my interests have gravitated toward outdoor things. Cooking took a similar hit -- if I have time to cook, it means I have time to ride....

That's what I was trying to say with my original post. For example, we're relocating to the Savannah area and every house I look at I'm thinking, "...nice road to bike on. I can probably get a few loops out of here". I'm a part time college student and I consider that a hobby of sorts, but I would much rather be out on my bike, like this morning, grinding it out. It's a good thing I love my family or I'd be out on the bike from quitting time until bedtime.

Is it just me or is photog the running secondary hobby of roadies? It seems like there are a lot of amateur photogs on the forum.

Boats, folks....

Enough to make most cycling spending habits look cheap. After owning boats all my life, I have shifted my allegence to cycling once and for all. Over the years, I have noted that when I'm into sailing, I don't have time for riding, and vice versa. I am currently selling my 38' ocean-going cruiser.

Now, I buy the best cycling equipment that I want and have a growing stable of bikes. The money spent is FAR LESS than what I had to to maintain any boat.

Now, let's talk about the other benefits. Boating contributes to practically "zero" physical benefits compared to what you get from riding. Having said this however, I will never regret the time I've spent floating. It's just that I'm at that time of my life when fitness, and my fascination with fooling with stuff, come together with cycling.
