Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

TT, build or buy?

I'm thinking seriously of up-dating my old TT/commuter. I don't do many TT's but I'd like to have a sub 9kg bike for the ones I do. It will be used for my daily 10k commute so I don't need anything too exotic but I'm thinking of maybe a nice older frame and doing a build, either that or go the hog and buy a Cevelo P2K.
Anyone care to comment?

not necessary....depending if you have a rocking frame. I admit that buying a TT bike is much cheaper, but you don't get the benefit of actually building it yourself. I have a Trek 2300 Pro from 1991 and i put on a Syntace/Prof Dgn aero. Reroute the cables. I am in the process of getting Prof Dgn Fast Forward and Fi:zi'k Arione to bring me closer to the front. I also have a Cervelo P2K, they ride about the same.

M8, you also gotta remember, you are in Sydney, I am in London, Ontario, Cervelo HQ is two hours away. Shipping and all that good stuff.

Cheers

I built an old Trek 2100 into a screaming TT bike a few years ago. The most expensive parts were the used shimano 8sp HED disk, the Campy TT crank with 54/44 rings, the bullhorns and aero bars, Brew Ti brake calipers and Ultegra 8sp bar end shifters. Everything else came from my spare parts bin and the bike was a mix of Campy and Shimano. My front wheel was a Spinergy RevX that i already had.

I also aquired a Concorde team PDM issue funny bike TT frame from the early 90's for the cost of 2 ball game tickets. I built it up too with other spare parts, but it wasnt as comfortable to ride s the Trek2100. I still have it and should probably sell it and the Zipp 400 650c front wheel i got for it.

If your not going to do TTs often, then save the move and build one from an old frame. TT bikes are too expensive for the amount of use they get. In the end its about the engine anyway. When i stopped racing in '01 i was able to sell all the high zoot parts for almost what i paid. So my net investment was almost nil.

Sounds like the sort of build I'm thinking about. Bits are cheap enough on Ebay. Frame is my first concern though and there doesn't seem to be much around at present.
