Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I for one have no desire to have a power tap. The reading it gives me might make me cry.

I hear that, my audio system has a higher power output than I do.

Doppler shift

Assuming the girl in front of you that you intend to pass and then smirk at is your signpost. Lets assume that she is wearing a white jersey if your relative velocity to hers is positive (meaning you are catching up with her), the wavelength of the light off her jersey will get shortened and shift towards blue (since blue has a shorter wavelenth). So if her jersey looks blue you are gaining on her.

If on the other hand, she if leaving you in the dust (meaning that your relative velocity is negative, the wavelength of the light off her jersey will be lengthened and will shift towards red (since red has a relatively longer wavelength). If her jersey looks red she is moving faster than you are.

From there, it is an easy matter to measure the amount of blue or red shift and determine at what velocity she is either moving towards you or away from you. It is then a simple matter of catching up with her (when she stops) and asking her how fast she was moving. You then take her velocity and add or substract the relative velocity to get your true velocity.

Of course if she is not wearing a white jersey the calculation gets a bit more complex. In any case you may need a spectroscope.

Or you could just get a bike computer.

Unless you're pretty serious about your riding, just go with the computer
I think some of the higher end Polar bike computers derive wattage by sensing chain tension and speed. While not exactly cheap, they're probably not as expensive as a PowerTap and you don't need a special wheel or crank. I'm however uncertain as to how accurate they are.

Well you can buy the Polar Power Option for a Polar S-710, S720 or S725. The power option costs $350 by it's self. The heart rate monitor to go with it is another $300 or so. So going the "cheap" way it will still cost you about $650 to $750 depending on which heart rate monitor you go with. Then after that you have to attempt to get it set up correctly. According to the reviews I have read few people have been able to get them set up right and then they still are not extremely accurate.

But that's half the price of a PowerTap setup so it's a bargain! I'll take two thank you.

I agree that none of the solutions are going to be inexpensive by normal standards. The PowerTap hub however at least looks hot.

Yeah. The Polar methodology seemed questionable.

It is quite simple. If you drop a good looking girl, you are going too fast. If the good looking girl drops you, you are going too slow. Everything else is irrelevant.

Somebody has been reading too many books by that guy in the wheelchair. I vaguely remember reading one of the shorter ones.

You guys may give me hell but my bike computer is going to be a handheld GPS I have that I also use on the motorcycle. It may look huge but it gives all kinds of crazy stats. And I can then do that Motion Based thing as well and NO WAY I can get lost..

Try this one. You can actually turn your ride into a video game. GarminEdge 305

Right now unless I can program it to let me race the equivalent of my overweight sister I will have to pass on this Edge 305. I got some serious work to do as I am just getting into this sport.

That thing would give me better exercise than my Xbox 360 though..

For Watts, simply take the highest number you see posted in any number of threads here, add 10% and there you go.
amish lamination = bee's wax (good for the skin too)

don't discount the amish though. They hand make all their bikes, although they get the steel directly from reynolds. No composite wimpy frames for them. They're also hardcore as they only make fixies with a 53-11 setup and no brakes.

Not necessarily. Check these prices out. Granted they are still higher than the polar they are nowhere close to double.

Power Tap SL for $987.99.
PowerTap pro for $812.99.

Couldn't resist.

How much larger is your handheld GPS compared to something like the Garmin Edge 305? I don't really see a problem with using a handheld GPS if you can either stuff it in your jersey or zip tie it to the bike.

Do you really think that Cateye didn't have the capability for the latest computer long ago... of course there will be upgrades, how else can I keep bleeding money out of you...

Then of course, after the technology has been fully exploited, which should be about version 6, I will be releasing the model in the team colors of the Amish Race Team. Corn Stalk Green and Wheat.

It is a Garmin 60 series and I do not think it would be too big with all it will record, but compared to a normal bike computer it is around 4 times the size.

If you pass me, you're going fast.

If you pass Lance, you're going really fast.

If you pass Chuck Norris, you're dreaming. Nobody can pass Chuck Norris.

3 ways to tell how fast you are going:

1.) If all you can hear is the howl of the wind and your hearting beating in your ears, you are going fast.

2.) How bad are your eyes watering?

3.) How much skin is left on the road if you go down?

If you need to ask this question, you'd better not get a bike computer- you'd cry at the reading.
