How much larger is your handheld GPS compared to something like the Garmin Edge 305? I don't really see a problem with using a handheld GPS if you can either stuff it in your jersey or zip tie it to the bike.
It is a Garmin 60 series and I do not think it would be too big with all it will record, but compared to a normal bike computer it is around 4 times the size.
