Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Now that I've got all you OC guys in one place, anyone know of a good way of getting from the San Fernando Valley to OC (Mission Viejo) short of hopping over Sepulveda to PCH and then up from Laguna?

Any time you want is good for me. And yes Flo's is still popular, especially with bikers, Hogs. The wait shouldn't be too bad. But then who knows.

I think you could take the freeways

I havent been out in that direction in awhile but I am fairly positive you can take a freeway route down there

* BUMP! *

So June 11, meeting at/near Nosra's place for a relaxed ride out to Chino and back.
Are we meeting at 8AM and rolling by 8:30 or so, or are we rolling by 8 AM? As a San Diegan, I'm hoping for the latter, but I'm cool either way.

So is 8 AM a meeting time or when we're actually rolling? I'd prefer to meet at that time and roll a bit later, but if enough people want to roll at 8, that's fine with me.

Lets meet at 8am and ride at 8.45. I just rode the route slowly yesterday and it was 1hour 5min via Carbon Canyon to the airport; and 1 hour 30 minutes back by way of Brea Canyon. Should be an easy ride! Even during the week I passed several bikers riding both directions.

Go to the Saturday night service if you have one.

Hey, ya'll come on over to my house at 16695 El Cajon, Yorba Linda, CA. I have lots of parking on the curb in front of and across the street from my house. Google earth will show you an overhead. The above posted ride profile will show you as well. Or Thomas Guide: Orange County, page 739-H3.

Now I do have to pass on bad news for me as well. I tried for the last two weeks to get someone to cover my San Diego training class that is on Sunday morning, with no luck.... I will have to skip this one, but I am recruiting several people to join you guys on the ride.

A lot depends upon how and when you want to get to Mission Viejo.
  • Take the 405 to the 5.
  • Take the Orange Line to the Red Line to the Metrolink Orange County Line.
  • Ride the Orange Line bikeway to the North Hollywood. Work your way down to the Los Angeles River Bikepath. When the bikepath ends wiggle your way through East LA to the southern reach of the Los Angeles River Bikepath. Take it all the way down to Long Beach. Head south/east until you meet up with PCH. Take PCH down to Newport Beach. Take the upper bay (?) bike path to Barranca. Rike Barranca/Muirlands into Mission Viejo.

I have a 87 mile drive each way. Mapquest says it will take 1.5 hours. I plan to leave my apartment at 6:30, walk to my car, stuff my bike in, get driving by 6:45. If I'm a few minutes late, you now know why.
