Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It turns out that the BMC Pro Machine that I am fixing to order (and that I've discussed on another thread) will go for $6900. Shipping to California will be $80. So it is about exactly $7000.

I am getting it from Competitive Cyclists, which has a lock on the limited BMC frameset supply. Just about everything Competitive Cyclist sells are $7000 road bikes. It is a real treat to check out the photos of each bike they sell prior to shipping at their web site.

I'd drop $2K on a good Bianchi or Lemond, then spend the other $5K on a tour of Europe with my new bike.

7000K?

Start with an R3 frame, Record gruppo, but Clavicula cranks, lightweight wheels -if I'm going to spend 3K in wheels, I'll get some that would break every hundred kms.
whatever's left over I'd have to spend on a divorce lawyer.

Yep. I would NOT buy an off-the-rack, plastic Taiwanese frame with slick marketing and an oversized price tag.

This falls into the 'what's your dream car?' category. What's the point? Gee whiz, pick up any bike magazine and start drooling. This is as subjective as 'what's your favorite color?'

That's a ton of dough for a bicycle. You can get just about anything for that price.

Then again, why not?

If cycling is something you enjoy and you got the money, why not spend it?

I've got the bike I like. It costs about the same as an extravent vacation we took. It costs much less than any of the family vehicles. It's much less than last years home improvment project (tore out deck and replaced it and half the back yard with a patio).

But dollar for dollar, it's the best value in terms of expenditures I've made. I have fun and enjoy every ride.

The alternative is spend the money on something else or invest it. I know I made the right choice each time I hop on for a ride.

Yep. Getta lugged steel bike made by a "craftsman" who's best selling point is "I can fix it when it cracks". The last thing you want is high-tech engineering or materials. And as well all know, the most important aspect of any frame is the filligree lugs.

i'd probably buy the bike i already have (tcr comp 0) and an aluminum tcr w/105 or ultegra for my winter bike and use the change to buy myself a new powerbook.

frankly, considering the level I'm at (and everyone else here i would guess) spending 7,000$ on one bike is assinine. if you're good enough for a 7K bike, then someone else should pick up the tab

He's got a Giant TCR 2.

I would build up a MOOTS Compact frame with ZIPPS 404 and ZIPP 909. Whatevers left over on the components.

It's quite possible to get a bike 7X the cost of what you are riding now (assuming TCR 2 Alu @ $1k) and not be noticeably faster.

And when you win those sprints with the $7K bike, the others will just think: "well, he should of won, look at the bike he's on..."

That's why Pee Wee Herman winning the TdF on his fancy beach cruiser was so remarkable.

At least 2. PRobably three and a lot of nice kit to keep it all on the road. Until my mortgage is paid and my retirement fully funded no way in hell I'm dropping $7k on a single bike. Much that I might dream it so.

My tastes aren't so extravagant...more's the pity. I think I could get my dream bike for roughly half that.

It's funny how peoples "dreams" differ. I'm building a $7K bike, but a big part of the dream was to do it for less than $3500.

So I bought the frame and fork used and horse traded for many of the other components. And with a fresh paintjob, it will look all shiny and new, not to mention custom, once it's complete.

Jus another way to get there.

^^^ 2 years and counting.

Good things come to those who wait.

For 7k, I think I would do something reminiscent of what I just did with my Ti machine. I would probably get a couple of matching frames for me and my wife. Then, shop around to piece them together with Record groups and some custom parts.

And of course, my own paint job.

For 7K I would get a BMC pro (I would get a colnago if I didn't have one) with record, cinelli ram and zip wheels (the total would be a little more than 7K though)
