Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Covered Bridges II - Bucks County, PA

We're on a roll now.

This one is just a bit hillier, much cooler, fewer horse sh*t on the road, and has great food and beverages at ALL of the rest stops.

Ride is scheduled for October 15, 2006.

https://www.cbbikeclub.org/?body=cove...236ad673253d05

It's north of Philly, which I think makes it Central PA - that's at least an hour less driving for you New England types.

Last year there were a bunch of BF riders. Just enough time for Mirona to recuperate and not enough for him to get in any other trouble. If we're lucky, we'll even have our BF jerseys.

Attendees: (I will edit to add folks to the list)
Metric
Spongedad + a world famous orthopedic surgeon, hows that for SAG support?
(but not Bibi, alas)
PSUAero
Adiankur
gurana (maybe)
cydewaze & Jess (unlikely)
Racermike (maybe)
RoadtoNowhere
badkharma (looking good)
baj32161 (maybe)
glade
Trekden
Pyro515

Shorter ride
OrangeOkie +1
Higherground (looking unlikely)
Little Darwin
jrod2143’s wife
guybierhaus

PM me if you're mistakenly not on list (my bad) or need to change status.

ROFLMAO Alas I will be returning to Central PA from Austin on the 14th so making it down for a ride is pretty much out of the question. Have a good time though.

Unfortunately I think that one is just beyond my range for this year. Maybe next year.

The climbs may kill me, but with the cooler weather and some preparation time, pencil me in.

I may go ahead and start early and let y'all catch me along the way...

Anyone else interested in being part of an ultra-casual (i.e. snail) group for the main peloton to chase down?

I figure if we leave an hour ahead of the peleton that we should be able to be on the road for 2 hours before they catch us.

My wife and I will probably do this but we will probably stick with the 33 mile ride on this one if we do.

Now, there is some motivation!

Actually, it should be noted, that if a certain someone is available to ride, I will be doing the short route, as I do have my priorities...

But, either way, I once again will compete for king of the mountain! After all, isn't the king of the mountain the person who stays on the climb the longest???

Grasschopper - want my Michigan tickets if I decide not to do this ride instead? Have to see how the PSU season is going before I commit to this ride. My guess is that we will be doing this ride but you never know.

Pencil me in for this one as well. I'm doing the Seagull the weekend before so I'll have to see if my wife is working. If not I may be able to swing this one as well. I grew up about 25 miles north of there. Definitely eastern PA. We don't say Pop (soda), Yun's, or anything else strange over in this part of the state.

Wow! This one IS in my back yard. I know I won't be able to ride, but I'd like to meet y'all at the start. Can I please just come and hang out?

SpongeDad... 'Central PA' is even further west than Lancaster. Bucks County is still considered part of the Tri-State area.

I grew up in King of Prussia, PA - anything west of the mall is central PA. Technically, Bucks County isn't west of KoP, but it still has farms, which effectively makes it central PA.

One vote for "Heck yes!"

As long as you make sure that the group doesn't hang out at the first stop waiting for you because they thought you are riding... Making them wait is my job!

This time I hope to make them wait at every stop, and not just the first three.

I need to see what my work schedule is. I'm going to put in for vacation, so I can be guaranteed the time off.

Hopefully they'll give it to me. Sometimes, inexplicably, vacation requests aren't granted.

I would love to ride with you folks again.

A week after the Seagull....hmmm, pencil me in. If its more challenging than the Lancaster ride Karrie may have to sit out, although she is planning on doing the Seagull. Maybe I can ride with the big kids this time

Even a better idea. Hang out at the start and chat (we'll likely be there for almost an hour based on yesterday). Then take off and meet us as the next big rest stop.... hang out and chat. Repeat until you're bored with us. You can be our official BF SAG wagon and picture taker. I'd be willing to pitch in money and pay for your gas and dinner afterward.

Great idea! A way to participate. Even if not equipped with a rack for true SAG support, at least someone to hang out with a rider who needs help until the SAG gets there. Maybe others that can't ride can participate... a carload of people to cheer the leaders as they arrive at each stop... I sure enjoyed arriving to cheering throngs when I lumbered into the rest stops... maybe someone else would like that feeling.

Bucks County is east of KoP, along the Delaware River/boundary with NJ, which makes it part of NYC, a suburb, so to speak. The ride area is generally NE of Philadelphia.

The CBBC CBR is, I think, the best ride around. I'd say it's slightly hillier than Lancaster' except for the occasional equestrian, we don't see horses (or buggies); but we do have something Lancaster doesn't--SHADE!!! (Although the trees may be a bit threadbare by mid-October.) There's good reason why we get ~2,800 riders every year. The 20 and 30 miles routes are quite flat and easy, for family or friends not up to the rolling terrain on the longer routes. Register early and get a l/s t-shirt with a design by a local artist/club member.

This year, instead of volunteering for parking, I'll probably work at one of the rest stops; if I can remember your faces from the Lancaster photos, I'll save you folks the best baked goods. If anyone coming in early wants to ride on Saturday, like you did in Lancaster, I can help plan a suitable route, maybe even show you around my favorite roads. Just let me know if there's anything I can do to make your visit as enjoyable as possible.

Hah... this is like being from Upstate NY.

If you live in NYC, then anything north of White Plains is Upstate NY.

If you live anywhere else in New York state, then Upstate is wherever you live or north of where you live, and anything south of where you live isn't.

btw, I'm from Upstate NY.

I am definitely going to try to make this ride this year, if I can get off from work that Sunday and get a ride from Burlington/Trenton NJ area. I can even get to Philly easily enough.

Cheers,

Brian

Wow... An insider at a rest stop.... and a rest stop with food... We've hit the jackpot, and we still have a couple of months to go.

You'll have to post a pic of yourself so that we recognize you to say hi!

I know I really appreciated the volunteers at Lancaster, even if they let everyone else eat the ice cream. And I want to thank you and the other volunteers in advance... and will do so in person as well.

I don't know yet if I will be spending the night (it is close enough for me to come down that morning if I wake up early) but if I do, I would be interested in a short ride on Saturday afternoon. Thanks for your willingness to make it memorable!
