Pedals....Thoughts?
Just purchased a new '06 Trek Madone 5.2 SL and figured I would upgrade to some new pedals while I'm in the process of spending money. I have a fairly ancient pair of Look pedals that could stand to be put to the grave. Was in the LBS checking out new pedals and didn't realize how much there is to choose from.
Any thoughts on Look vs Shimano pedals? In the Look line the LBS has the keo classic, keo sprint, and keo carbon. Shimano they have an ultegra and dura-ace pedal. The keo carbon and dura-ace pedals are a little out of the price range I'd like to spend, though if people have good feedback on these I'd love to hear. Thoughts or opinions????

Keo Carbons. check out probikekit.com for the best price around. I picked mine up for I think $120-ish. If you're used to LOOKs now, you'll enjoy the Keos. The only advantage I see of the Shimano Ultegras are the cleats are a little easier to walk around in without covers.

I have the keo classics, they work just great. Not real blingy, though. If I had a Madone I'd go upscale to the Carbons.

I have 2 pairs of Keos, one sprint and one carbone. I don't feel the difference between them both great. Bought both from PBK for a very good price. I recommend them.

Keo Carbons. check out probikekit.com for the best price around.
What is more, they come with a pair of coffee shop covers, and the cleats. They are lighter than anything, even Speedplays (which require a 45 gram adaptor plate).
Some of the particulars of Look Keos are discussed on this thread.

I have the keo carbons, and my friend has the dura ace. I've tried his bike/shoes/pedals and they function exactly the same as the looks. Shimano made the spd-sl pedals just for lance to be like looks.

I got the Ti spindles, and it is gratifying indeed to put them on a scale and find that your new pair of pedals together weighs less than one of your standard Looks.

If you get a spare set of the gray replacement cleats at ProBikeKit, they'll be cheaper than from other retailers plus you get a set of cleat covers.

Time RXS are a serious alternative, with much more adjustment than either Look Keo's or Shimano spd-sl.
I love the angular and lateral float which can be adjusted, also has the ability to alter Q factor by swapping cleats from one shoe to another, extremely positive release and step in, low stack height keep your foot close to the pedal axel.

Look Keo's! I switched early this year from regular Looks ... I like the Keo's much better.

I have the Look Keo Carbons and I really like them. Unfortunately I don't have anything to compare them too because they are my first set of clipless pedals. As for the cleat covers, mine definitely did not come with them, but my LBS gave them to me. I have the cromo version though. Maybe the titaniums do include the covers.

I like the SPD-SLs mostly because the cleats are a little easier to walk in than the Look cleats (the Looks felt very slick to me). They are both great pedals and you really can't go too wrong here. Oh, and another plug for probikekit on pedal prices. They are tough to beat.

I switched to Shimano after going through so many pairs of Looks I lost count. In addition to the annoying squeeks and noise, they flat don't hold up. I've had the tension mechanism stop working. In one case the spring broke. Another time it just got progessively more difficult to release. A couple pair had bearings go bad.
So far after three years, no problem with the Shimanos on two different bikes. The cleats alos hold up much longer.

I like the Look Keo's - the only things I don't like about them is the cleats are slippery to walk on and they wear out quickly. Mine did come with cleat covers, but they're a pain to fiddle with so I don't use 'em.
I've been wanting to try Speedplays. I hear the dirt issue in the cleats is a pain but I like the two sided design. I think that would be a huge advantage.

I don't have any problems with the Keo Cleat covers, I like them especially as they fit within the tight confines of the tennis ball container I use as all purpose storage in my bottle cage.

I use the Shimano SPD-SL's. They are a look copy so we might be talking about the same thing. The Shimano's are bullet proof and the 105 versions are very reasonable in price. I like the fact that the pedal is large enought that you could use them with tennis shoes if you are just riding around the neighborhood.
