The best car is a truck. If you need 4 doors, a toyota or nissan crew cab with a short bed for bikes is perfect. I have the nissan frontier crew cab 4x4 and love it. If you don't need the doors, a single cab pickup (japanese) with a bed is about as practical as it gets. Those 4bangers get great mileage...or get the 6 if you need it. You also have the option of adding a topper/camper.

I prefer the Honda Odyssey. I can carry my bike upright in the back with the rear seat down. Plus lots of room for my gear.

There's messengers in almost every major city in the world, about 18 of them here at the moment, and given the choice, here is better, cost of living is way way cheaper than most other places, less traffic, and less ground to cover while working. You probably spend more of weenie wear than I do in rent.
we are everywhere, crushing weenies like you for fun LOL

You're right there ARE bike messengers in 'major' cities. So how does that explain their presence in Columbus, Ohio, population 711,470 as of the 2000 census. No knock on Columbus or anything, but that's 'major'? Sorry. NY is 'major'. SF is 'major'. Chicago is 'major'. I'm astonished to hear that it's efficient to delivery packages in Columbus by bicycle. Apparently.
By the way you're welcome to come here on any Sunday and we'll see who you crush : ).

You'll all forgive the shameless advertising and promotion here, but when I tell it's free, then maybe it isn't that much of a transgression.
If cars remotely interest you (and seeing that this thread is many, many pages long it would seem that riders are interested....), then you need to check-out the magazine we're publishing: Winding Road. No strings attached, it's really free (unless you consider providing your email address a payment) and it's edited by the gentleman that launched Automobile and put Car and Driver on the map. Go to: www.windingroad.com and once you've registered, you can hit the 'read new issue' button on the navigation bar across the top and be prepared to be amazed. I'm partial, but it's that good. AND, it's run by a fellow rider and forum member!
Now, how about we do a cycling magazine too???

The way it's suppose to look
(After 30 miles or so in heavy rain. Couldn't see the license plate when I had finished)
Going to sell it though and get a f-250, r33 skyline, or a STi wagon. (best friend imports skylines for a living) More practical and ready for a change.
Btw... good choice on the outback. I'd love to get myself a Legacy spec b.

Here's mine, 1967 MGB. Restoration is considerably further along than this old picture from a couple of year back....

-my original intended bike hauler, to bad it never got around to getting finished, instead is now just a lawn ornament:
here it is w/ air suspension deflated:
-my new bike hauler, 92 VX civic hatchback, 54 mpg, NOT a hybrid, cost under 3000$, bike fits in back with the seat folded down. can't beat it

Don't have an image of mine, but it's basically this one minus ugly purple flames. Just plane white. I want to re-paint it, but keep blowing all my money on my bike!
I also have this (again no picture of my own), only in dark blue. Usually I drive this around.

The rest of you are probably disappointed that it's not a Subaru. In any case, I can fit a bike in the trunk with both wheels off or with the rear seats down and the wheels still on. 200 horsepower from a turbo 4 mated to a 6-speed DSG transmission. EPA rated for 25 city / 32 highway. Sweet.
