The Giro Monza is a $100 helmet, but you can get it for <a href="https://www.competitivecyclist.com/za/CCY?PAGE=BUY_PRODUCT_STANDARD&PRODUCT.ID=2708&CATEGORY.ID=10&MODE=&TFC=TRUE">$70 right now</a> from Competitive Cyclist if you wear a small or medium. I *love* mine.

Road Helmet: Best Bang for the Buck
Pun intended I crashed and wrecked my Bell Alchera helmet and am looking to get a different one. The only thing I didn't like about the Alchera is that the straps never sit flat, so they catch air and make a noise when riding. The manufacturer of my rims might be paying for it if they decide the rims were indeed defective. I was tempted to tell them it was an Atmos, but I can't lie. I was considering trying a Rudy helmet but wanted to know what you guys think is the best helmet for ABOUT $50?

Love Giro helmets and especially love their crash policy. You get a nice discount if you crash one of their helmets, no questions asked. I replaced my old Giro E2 mtb helmet and got a Giro Pneumo road helmet and also a new Giro E2 for my mtb.
Incase you didn't know; Bell actually owns Giro. Bell might have the same crash replacement policy. Can't hurt to ask.
Edit: Just noticed the $50 limit there... shop around, you can find some great prices on helmets all the time. Keep in mind that all helmets have to pass the same crash tests, the reason for the wide range of prices is the weight and number of vents; that's pretty much all.

I have this helmet, and I've been pretty happy with it: https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...egory_ID=4210#
Luckily, I can't tell you how it holds up in a crash, but it should be fine.

Uvex Sport Boss. Should be less than $50 on Amazon or some such site. Very light, very ventilated, great chinstrap which is adjustable on-the-fly. Better than my high-end $150 helmet.

Helmets
Giro are great. But in all actuality they probably all give close to the same protection. Only if you are looking at wind resistance or your issues with straps flapping does the price make huge difference. You are very fortunate to have no permanent injuries. Sometimes stuff happens and you came out well based on this incident. Do get what you like in helmets there is no sense in not being satisfied with a purchase. Spend $20 less and don't like it ... its not worth it.

Bell Furio feels as comfy as the sweep R for around 50usd. I had it for a year now. I wanted a giro but somehow never felt comfy with them so after trying the furio, I was sold.

When I went shopping for a helmet, even though I was out of work at the time, I bought what felt the best. Which, unfortunately for me was an Atmos .
But I love that helmet. Very comfy (for me, anyway).

I don't know what you guys are talking about regarding the straps. Please don't explain since I'm happy.

Rudy Project Ayron. 3 year warranty. Can buy for 109 at a shop or for less online. Very comfortable and fits me much better than a Giro and Bell. Try helmets on, as fit is the most important for whether or not you like it.

They are all pretty much the same. The Giro Atmos has huge vents which here in the South is a big deal because it gets HOT in the summer. Other than that get the one that you like and can get a good deal on.

That Monza does look pretty nice. And yeah, it wasn't a $50 cap as much as a rough estimate. I do plan on trying them on before buying, though, but Performance and a plethora of LBSs are around for me to go to.
As for the strap thing, it wasn't a big deal (or I would have returned the helmet) but the straps wouldn't sit flat against my face like other helmets I have owned, both Bell and Giro. It doesn't hurt anything, but it looks weird like an extra set of ears. It might depend on the rider's face shape, though. I have a narrow head. It still fit fine, though, and if nothing else fits I'll buy another. Just wish they would have designed the fit adjustment a little better.
Got back on the bike yesterday using my Giro MTB helmet for now. Yes, I was lucky to not get any really bad injuries. Almost all the rash is healed, just a sore shoulder muscle left and that's getting better.

+1 I have a Giro Monza, you can pick it up for around 60-70.00 bucks on sale (just need to search) and is the lowest Giro helmet with the styrofoam covered in the back.
The Bell Ghisallo also looks nice.

I like my Bell Alchera, which I bought for $ 39 from Nashbar. I have a large head (7 5/8"), so many of the 'large' helmets are too tight for me. The Alchera large is very comfortable.
