Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No performance data, but all of us who want to emulate our favorite pros wear lycra. You have to play the part, man.

When I first started, I wore cargo shorts. I now find lycra to be more functional/comfortable.

Chipcom, I have to say I really like your posts. Just what I was thinking.

A little flapping in the breeze isn't going to slow you down much. I wear cutoffs all the time. Works fine for me. I doubt anyone is going to mistake me for a serious cyclist - until I pass them.

It is the miles that make the cyclist, not the clothes. If you want to wear them, go ahead, but don't think you have to.

It would depend on how fast you ride and the particular shorts (some grab air more than others) but a rough estimate would be at least a half pound of drag in my estimate which, for comparison, is simply the difference between pedaling with your knees close to the top tube versus not. If you're not riding for speed then this is entirely negligible.

If you do care about speed it's definitely not a small issue -- one to two minutes over 25 miles.

I did the lycra phase...then went back to cargos. I still wear em sometimes, if going on a club-type ride, but most of the time I am touring, going places, seeing people, doing everything folks normally do, except I am getting there on my bike.

Hmmm, if I wanted to play the part today, I'd have to dress like Lemond does...today!

The issue between tight and baggy shorts for me is comfort not speed.

I came from mountain biking and ditched the baggy shorts before I even got my first road bike. I got tired of near death experiences catching my shorts on the saddle in technical bits.

Point of order, there is a difference between baggy and loose. Young folks today seem to like to wear 'baggy' shorts that come down past their knees, legs as wide as some countries, hung so low you think they want a career in plumbing.

Perhaps i should have quoted better, but i don't see the purpose of chastising a person because of what clothes they'd like to wear.

Well for me, i sure am not going to be wearing lycra shorts on campus. So for the 10 mile ride i just put some cycle underwear i got from Performancebike.com under my cargo shorts. I do wear lycra when i go on ling rides though. Its just easier to move around in and is more comfortable. Although i do have a question: what are some good lycra shorts under 80 bucks? I have been using some nike ones that i got at academy and they are wearing out. Any ideas on a good pair that arnt to short and have good padding?

I was into the whole jersey/lycra short thing but it got really annoying having to dress up every time i want to go riding. Difference in speed is so small its neglegible. Comfort in baggy shorts isn't an issue either, i rode from FL to CA regular cargo shorts with no issues.

I checked my post in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox (both newest versions) and I didn't see any large type in either browser. Mozilla displayed the type as identical in size even if one adjusted the font size. Internet Explorer, on the other hand, did display the font size of my post larger if the browser was set to Page > Text Size > Larger. This is a rare setting.

So you just wear the padded baggy shorts around the house? If not, the "I don't have to change when I ride" thing is lost on me.

Would you stop doing that?

Just kidding.

Pearl Izumi Quest - $49.99 list, you may find deals on them if you shop around. I haven't done a century, but I've done several 100k rides on mine. They've been both comfortable and durable.

You can wear nearly any kind of shorts w/nearly any kind of saddle for 10 mi. or less. 20 miles is doable with a well broken in leather saddle and nearly any shorts, but the lycra shorts really make a difference on rides longer than 20 mi., especially with the crappy plastic saddles that come on even high dollar bikes.

No I wear shorts around the house...padded undies are only for long rides. It's one of the perks of using those Brooks saddles that you roadies love to hate - I don't need no stinkin diaper! (I loath padded baggy shorts too - I can see why folks get them caught on their saddles)

I tried baggy MTB shorts for my MTB rides on the C&O canal (sand/clay/gravel). That stopped after a friend and I got surprised (without fenders) by some steady rain. The shorts quickly got sodden with wet sand. Since they were loose and mobile they turned into very effective sandpaper.

Get those liner type short with a pad. Not sure what they are called. Pearl makes them. Kind of looks like a pair of undershorts with a pad. Then wear what ever you like over them. Young guy on some group rides with us uses them with nylon running shorts as a top layer and it seems to work well.
