Pearl Izumi Quest - $49.99 list, you may find deals on them if you shop around. I haven't done a century, but I've done several 100k rides on mine. They've been both comfortable and durable.
You can wear nearly any kind of shorts w/nearly any kind of saddle for 10 mi. or less. 20 miles is doable with a well broken in leather saddle and nearly any shorts, but the lycra shorts really make a difference on rides longer than 20 mi., especially with the crappy plastic saddles that come on even high dollar bikes.
