Music to Ride By?
I am a recreational rider and like to have my mp3 player with me because I ride alone most of the time. I like songs that inspire my riding. I have from classical such as the, "ride of the Valkeries" by Wagner to "I want to Ride my Bicycle" by Queen.
Is there anybody else out there that likes to run with a cycling playlist and if so, what songs do you listen to that inspire you?
Thanks for any inpute.

and the wind blowing against my face. But seriously, riding with headphones is generally a no-no. Try getting pumped before you ride.

assuming you are on the road, you will not hear approaching cars or other unforeseen dangers. Hearing is a significant percentage of human perception.

Judas Priest gets my vote, along with a variety of other great metal. I would keep the volume low and use a mirror and always look first and....... rock on. Music or not is like triple vrs double around here; I've never had a problem because of it (music that is; wouldn't be cought dead with a triple!) lol...

The wind, singing of the tires and chain, geese flying overhead, the sound of a hawk, the stories my training partner is telling, kids hollering "GO LANCE!" ... all on my favorites list when I'm riding.
I find that the last song I heard before I started the ride will last for hours! (that might be good or bad).

I don't see how you would do anything different assuming you could hear it.

I want to thank those who replied without a condescending remark. Not all of us are experts and know everything about riding. Most of the time my playlist is for when I am on the trainer. When I do ride with my mp3 player the music is very low and with my mirror I am very alert to traffic. I don't ride on city roads, I mostly ride on a stretch of road that has very long straights and plenty of room on the side. I can see cars coming from long distances. When I ride on unfamiliar roads I don't wear it.
I thought when I took up golf, that sport had rude and unfriendly people, but I am finding the rudest people in the cycling sport. I have had to reprimand people at bike shops for their attitude (after spending thousands of $ on a bike!). When is the cycling sport going to realize that if we aren't friendlier to non-cyclist this sport will never become as popular as it is in Europe.

I wasn't trying to be condescending at all, just trying to promote safety. Motorists here in the U.S. do not respect the cyclist's safety on the road, which is the reason why we have to be as safe as possible, especially while riding alone. There are far too many bike/car fatalities not to be.

I listen to all kinds of different stuff, from Mozart to Metallica. I have 3 different play lists set up on my iPod for cycling. Just pick what you like and modify your play lists to what type of riding you do. I have on for intervals, one for long (50+mile) rides and another for when I'm going on a short balls out ride.
The music/no music thing has been beat to death here. Anytime you ask about listening to music, you'll have to weed through those posts.

I wasn't meaning you wrote4luck, you're comments seemed more instructional than the others. My point was that I do realize the safety issue, but the way those other comments sound (not yours) was rude and condescending.
I have run into many cyclist that if you're not at their level they look down their noses at you. I'm not talking a person here or there, I have run into a lot. Is that the perception we want to give?

But, I did describe my playlist... it is the sounds of the world around me, including the traffic approaching me... and, I included my reason for doing so. I did not answer with an intention to be condescending... I did answer with an intention that you might be able to learn something useful (IMO) from my perspective about bicycling in traffic.
You're grown... do what you wanna do... and I am sorry if my post is one of the ones that annoyed you.

But I agree, you'll find condescending posts in just about every threads just as you'll find jerks in every aspect of your life.
trying and change the way some posts on here is a lost battle, specially on the net where some people think it's OK to treats others in a way they'd probably be too coward to do face to face.
Hang around for a while, the condescending posters wears off ( most the time) and the majority of people on here are extremely supportive and informative.

Isn't music a personal choice?
*just really never got the point of these types of threads*

Music choice is a personal thing. My play list has everything from Heavy Metal, Rock, Classical. Somepople might enjoy Country music on their rides. It really is up to you.

I don't ride with music on the road, but I do when I'm on my rollers.
Unfortunately, I tend to bob my head from side to side and move my shoulders with the music, which tends to have me going from side to side on the rollers.
Worst or best songs (depending on how you look at it):
James Brown "Get Up"
GNR "Welcome to the Jungle"
Peter Gabriel "Steam"

For example, I like Brandy's Full Moon CD; Most anything with a good enough beat by Jay-Z. Black Eyed Peas. Talib Kweli. I could vary my cadence with the beats.
For the casual spin, I do Me'Shell NdegeOcello, Floetry and Jagged Edge .. I might throw in Avril Lavigne or Alanis Morissette's whole collection. I wouldn't care about cadence on such rides.
Of course, this is all hypothetical as I don't ride with headphones on. That, like, music, is a personal choice.
