Why no aero bars on road bikes?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road racers are not always in packs -- critical breakaways or chases could easily be decided by the existence or not of aerobars. Using aerobars in a pack when it's safe to do so would also have significant benefits even if there are many who doubt it (and global warming.)

How is the rear derailleur shift lever mounted on that handlebar?

i mounted it to a paul components thumbie. the thumbie's in this sweetspot where comfort is unaffected by placement, the shifter doesn't interfere with the brake lever/braking and the angle is just right for effortless shifting.

I'd love to see an overhead/detailed shot of your bar setup.

(Dang that bike just looks fast...)

I thought the GT was the only "tripple triangle."

In racing there are rules, they follow them when they have to.
If they can get an advantage somehow then most will ie: Zeb's photo above.

I have aero bars. I use them on my rides. I get 2-3 mph on a flat just tucking into them. Call me names, I don't care, I don't live my life to impress others. I give a nod to all other riders, full team kit or jeans. Some people take themselves too seriously. Cycling fashionistas can kiss my @$$.

congrats Johnny Tribar, you're my hero...

taking oneself too seriously, and riding with complete disreguard for your safety and the safety of everyone around you are 2 completely different things, and you're the later...

a friend was on a training ride, with 2 of his friends, all of which were on tri bikes. before he knew it, he was bloody mess on a motorists windshield, because he couldn't get to his brakes fast enough. luckily, he's doing well now, and he's started training again in baby steps. some people, like yourself, just need something bad to happen to them before they realize what everyone else is talking about. hopefully, it won't involve anyone else though...

my setup is intended to prevent exactly that sort of an occurrence.

Uh, yeah. Honestly, you need to stop being such a wimp.
A whiney case built around unlikely hypothetical outcomes meant to hyperbolize risk is not a compelling one.

Do you think the thousands of road bike riders who go down ever year in races blame the bike and refuse to saddle up again?

Face it, my feline friend. You got nothing going on here in terms of a coherent and compelling argument.

By the way the irrational, fearful element is thinking here, you'd think triathlons and team time trials were just huge messes of falling bodies and people being gored (hahahaha). It's simply not the case. The folks saying that these are the rules, this is the way we play the game, are actually make a lot more sense than those who are attempting to rationalize something that can't be reasonably defended.

i'm usually in front, so it's not an issue.

edit: plus... being in any sort of pileup hurts regardless of what you're being hit in the back with--which would... in all likelihood, sooner be the elbow or pedal of someone turning away from the pile than a direct bar-gore.

I BET GETTING POKED IN THE EYE OR THE THROAT OR THE ELBOW WITH EGG BEATER PEDALS OR A CHAINRING IN A PILE UP IS A LOT OF FUN!
They should outlaw them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Waah! Waah!

Just plain dangerous I tell ya!

I once had a friend go out riding with a couple of his friends with chainrings. Next thing he knew he was in the hospital bleeding.

Also there are plenty of cases where, in team time trials, guys with aerobars gored each other in a pileup like it was some gay orgy video.
Plenty.

How about those toe clip pedals! I don't know how many times I've seen riders go down wearing those things. Downright DANGEROUS!!!! If those were legal, there would be riders falling down on train tracks and struggling to get loose from their bikes as a locomotive turned their bodies into Jeffrey Dahmer's fridge!!! I refuse to ride with toe clip guys!!

Whoever bought this bike is a jerk who rides with no regard for his own life or the lives of others! He has no drops and those are pointy bars!

I'd hate to ride next to him waiting for the inevitable pileup where I end up a bloody mess. Same for any "johnny tribar" or other cleverly named elitist nonsense groupthink I can muster up.

How careless of me to even consider riding on aerobars. I deserve what's coming to me. While we are at it, we should eliminate all bikes with those ball-crushing top tubes, or the uncovered spinning spoked wheels of death waiting to suck hapless feet, arms and heads into them. We should also bring back the brake lever extensions for the top bar... yeah, that'd keep us all safer.

exactly. and anything resembling dahmer's fridge can't be all bad. choice meat's hard to come by and cyclists serve up nice and lean.

I'm not a triathlete, so it is not my own. And since when are triathletes not elitist?

I personally use toe clips (I leave them a little lose to get out of them) and clip on aero bars. I feel completely safe with them and my friends feel safe using aero bars and clips as well. We use them on long empty roads and when we get into a town or any traffic we use either the hoods or the drops where we can shift and brake. When used properly many of the things cyclists will call unsafe are actually very safe.

I the aero bars were to be only used when alone, which isn't that often, then the rest of the time they would add drag and weight

Has anyone mentioned Team Time Trial yet? Admittedly, its a team of TT bikes only.
