Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The lycras are wierd at first, you walk into a coffee shop or something and you feel like people are just staring at you, but than after a minute it doesn't matter. They're more comfortable to wear while riding and you get complimented often lol.

I have no bibs, but I've been wondering what the advantages are -- fit, feel, etc..

They're less likely to change position while you're riding, no waistband cutting into your middle, you don't hang out in back like a plumber under the sink, your junk tends to stay in the same place better. And I'm one of the minority that tends to prefer shorts over bibs after trying both.

Things I don't like so much with bibs: I sweat a lot, and actually like that the waistband on shorts stops the sweat from my upper body from running into my crotch; I tend to run hot, and having an extra layer on part of my upper body isn't conducive to staying cool.

Having said all that, I think I'm going to wear bibs on my morning ride tomorrow.

Wear what you feel comfortable in. There's no law telling you what to wear. I wear baggy shorts as I'm fat and I'd feel self concious going into a shop in lycra. In fact I don't really see whey recreational riders were the lycra as surely its mostly for aerodynamics and unless you're in competition who cares about going few % faster.

I don't go fast enough to really consider aerodynamics, yet I still prefer smooth lycra for the reasons I've posted earlier.

I might try bibs sometime, too, although I also "run hot" and sweat a lot.

Lycra is not about aerodynamics, it is about comfort and utility, especially if you wear bibs, as yogi13 indicated above.

Wear whatever makes you comfortable and improves the quality of the ride for you.

But don't assume that baggy shorts are better just because they're more like what you're used to. Tight lycra is awfully comfy.
