Canadians, what are you going to buy now that we have hit parity?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

[QUOTE=rbart4506;5307656]Don't know where you heard that....

Whenever I travel to the states I have no probs crossing the border, into Canada, with my car stuffed to the gills with new bike stuff. All they have asked is where I live and how much I spend. I always make sure I spend less then what I'm allotted, which is $750/person/week....Which BTW is a fair bit of cash when you go with your wife...I think the people that were getting dinged were the day shoppers to the States. Travellers, as in staying for an extended vacation, usually have no problems.

QUOTE]
Seems like it was in the Detroit Newspapers, commenting about returing Canadians after a one day shopping spree in Duluth. Lets say, a whole bike , it is easy to exceed 750 dollars , Canadian. Then what.

Well I would buy the bike when I was going down on vacation. I'd ride it for the week and then bring it home as my own. When we cross the border it's not like they want receipts for every single thing we purchase. Like I said, day shoppers have more problems, but if you are gone on vacation it's pretty easy. I have never had an issue getting back into the country with whatever I have. I think they're more worried about you bringing in tobacco and booze, then bike stuff...

Honestly everytime I cross back in I get asked how long I've been gone (7days), do I have alcohol or cigarettes (no), what's the total amount of purchases (about $1000)...I answer the first two honestly and stretch the third...They then say have a nice day...

Help me out here, fellow canucks, has anyone had problems getting back across the border??

BTW the price of bike at an LBS in the US and here in Canada don't differ that much....Not to the point where I would think about buying one down there...Now ebay and online, that's a different story...

But Bush has just reinforced debt spending, it's not 'saved tax dollars' being spent, it's borrowed money.
The national and consumer debt in the US is the highest in history, while jobs are being outsourced out of the country. Huge debt, reduced productivity. Imminent collapse of the US housing market due to foreclosures is another thing Greenspan is warning about, but no one is listening, we could see bank collapses far worse than the S&L disaster mediated by GW's uncle Neil Bush.
It may surprise you, but despite higher taxes in Canada, consumer debt is much lower, jobless rate is lower, and we even have more millionaires/billionaires per capita than the US.
When you concentrate all the nation's economic policies to benefit 5% of the people, this is what happens.

You've been lucky, but what you are describing is smuggling.

Ok, you can call it that...But all the cool kids are doing it

Honestly it's not like I'm bringing a car full of stuff over....I'm allowed $1500 (for my wife and I) and the worst was when we were on our honeymoon for 2 weeks...We definitely went over the limit that time, but they never asked for receipts only the amount.

These days we are always way below the limit...the deals are better on ebay and online then at US shops...

Now come on Doc...How many people actually drive across the border and report the actual amount of stuff they are importing??

Yeah, things are great. Good thing Stronach has that great exchange rate to help pay for the surgery she apparently needed faster than the "system" could provide.

Funny part of this is that she's buds with Hillary. Amazing how that works.

BTW...one of my hockey friends (former teammate) got a former teammate who lives in the Toronta area into the state for brain cancer surgery. He had these really bad blinding headaches. He got into the doctor who told him he needed an MRI and it would be 3 and a half months before it could be scheduled to see if he had a tumor. Probably a couple more months for surgery if needed, which the doctor guessed would be the case.

He came here. Got the MRI the day after he arrived, had a tumor, and they did surgery the next day. He's not in great shape, but he'll live. We can make an educated guess that had he followed the socialist system, that would not have been the case.

Good thing the exchange rate is so good.

The really funny part is the daughter of a friend of ours from Florida is married to the son of a former PM. She gets in to get whatever she wants, whenever she wants. Imagine that.

Before you jump my @$$, my wife's family is from Canada.

Go Habs.

Now what does any of this have to do with road cycling?

FWIW, a lot of countries are a bit peeved with the US for allowing its currency to sink. But hey, it makes Canadian oil more expensive so that's a good thing, right?

The falling American dollar must be the reason why those Flying Pigeons on eBay are so expensive.

Never any problems coming back; just choose the smallest border crossing you can find because those don't have supervisors watching over there backs.

That is the plan. The best way to get out of debt is to pay your loan back with reduced value. Canada wrote the book on this. The US is on the same path that Canada was on in the 80s and 90s.

Nah, they'll be more suspicious that you're up to something naughty.

Choose a medium one that's overburdened. I recommend Calais, Maine. (no, they don't pronounce Calais correctly there)

One of the few things that Bush did right, and of course, you never hear about it because ....well, because it's one of the things he's actually done right, and no one wants to hear that right now.
Ecept the uber rich take their money and companies and move them overseas now. Nice try Reagen. trickle down doesn't work in a global economy.
